This is a special day guys! This month marks 1 year with the Recipe ReDux! I remember how excited and happy I was to be accepted into the wonderful group of foodie bloggers and become a member. These posts are some of my favorites. I love the fun little challenge presented to us each month. The theme for each new months gets posted on the 1st of that month. So when a new month rolls around, the first thing I do is click over to the ReDux site, log in, and check out the ever-awaited theme!
I suggested that our leaders make a Facebook group for all the member many months ago, and they finally did just that a few months ago. So now not only do we all connect each month through our linked-up recipes, but we also get to connect each day sharing our posts and visiting each others blogs. The ReDux ladies (I'm pretty sure we are all women!) are some of the best and most creative foodies. I am so happy to be a part and be able to connect with them! XOXO
October’s Theme: Spooky Spices – You know they are lurking there: Way in the back of your spice drawer. There lie the herbs, spices, or rubs that are getting dusty because you’re afraid to use them… you simply don’t know what to do with them! Well, pull them out and show us a recipe you created to deliciously conquer that fearful spice. (Or maybe the recipe was a flop – and the spice still give you nightmares?!)
With me being the spice queen and all, you'd think this would be a pretty exciting challenge. But no spice scares me so I wasn't sure how to make this interesting for me...and for you. Until the above picture happened. My mom had bought some whole yellow mustard seeds thinking she needed them to make corned beef and the packet of spices wasn't included. Long story short, she never ended up using the little bottle of mustard seeds and it sadly sat there in the cabinet for a while. Until I realized it was my chance to make my own homemade mustard!
I've wanted to do this for so long as I love DIYing foods as much as I can and I love mustard! From stoneground, Dijon, even honey, I love them all. Preferably with no salt. The best way to guarantee an additive-free safe mustard is to make your own, which is surprisingly easy. All you need are some mustard seeds, water, and vinegar. Of course you can get crazy and add spices, herbs, stevia, even salt if you are like that 😉
You let the seeds soak for 24-48 hours. Then you blend them up into a nice fluffy mustard! Perfect for spreads on sandwiches, mixed into dressings, added to veggies, etc. Just a nice healthy way to add some flavor and spice to any dish or food without all the processed craziness! Plus you look pretty badass for making your own mustard. It's pretty "badge and crown" worthy if I do say so!
Homemade Spicy Mustard
Ingredients: (makes about 1 cup)
+ ¼ Cup Whole Yellow Mustard Seeds
+ ⅓ Cup White Wine Vinegar (or plain white, even apple cider vinegar!)
+ ½ Cup Water
+ ¼ Tsp Onion Powder
+ ¼ Tsp Garlic Powder
+ ¼ Tsp Turmeric
+ 5 Drops Plain Stevia (optional)
Directions:
+ Soak ¼ cup mustard seeds in ⅓ cup vinegar and ½ cup water for 24-48 hours in a cloth-covered jar.
+ Add the mustard seeds and liquid to a small food processor along with the spices and optional stevia. Blend until smooth.
+ Store in a glass jar with a tight lid.
There you have it! Super easy once you see the steps right? Show off your fearless mustard skills to your friends and family. I bet they will be more than impressed! Happy mustarding!
So tell me:
+ Does any spice scare you? Any you really want to try, but don't know how to use it? I can help!
+ What is your favorite type of mustard? Dijon is my #1!
