A super simple 3-Ingredient DIY Vegan Instant Hot Chocolate Mix you can whip up in a flash! Sugar-free, gluten-free, paleo, keto, and allergy-free, this healthy hot cocoa mix recipe is perfect for holiday gifts or stocking the pantry with a quick a cozy drink to warm the soul!
Mmm, the cozy, body-warming, deliciousness of some classic hot chocolate on a cold winter's day! I grew up drinking gallons of hot chocolate! From those perfect packets of instant Swiss Miss (the ones with the tiny marshmallows that dissolved right when you added the hot water were the best!) to the super-rich and decadent cups from Dunkin' Donuts (which ALWAYS gave me a stomachache, but were so good!).
You could not forget the whipped cream either. Canned whipped cream was okay, but the best "hot cocoa hack" my mom taught me was to get a container of Cool Whip, keep it in the freezer, and top your hot chocolate with a big scoop of the semi-frozen cool whip. It didn't dissolve super fast and was SO delicious to eat off the top of the hot cocoa with a spoon. DREAMS!
One thing I couldn't STAND having in my hot chocolate was actual marshmallows. I only liked those fake little ones that were already in the packets (haha!). The whole "raw marshmallow thing" floating on top of perfect hot chocolate was just so nasty. I don't want to chew my beverage...thank you very much. But here's something nifty, you can buy those super mini dissolvable marshmallow "bits" now! They're actually allergy-free, just not vegan...sigh. We always have MY sugar-free, vegan, marshmallow fluff thought! Acts as the marshmallow AND as the whipped cream!
As for the hot chocolate mix, let's keep it super simple, super clean, but still super yummy! The first 3 ingredients in a package of Swiss Miss are: SUGAR, CORN SYRUP, MODIFIED WHEY. Cocoa is finally the 4th and then there is even hydrogenated oil in the packets (hydrogenated means TRANS fat, by the way.) Basically, we have a huge mess on our hands and one that I don't want to drink again (regardless of the fact that it's not dairy-free). There should only be 3 things in a good hot chocolate mix. The cocoa, the sweetness, and the creaminess. Possibly some 3-ingredient combination like this...
That's much more appealing don't you think (hopefully you've watched the video at this point!) Just some unsweetened cocoa powder, Swerve, and coconut milk powder! A delicious, sweet, creamy win! Perfect for packaging up into pretty little jars for the upcoming holidays as gifts and of course keep in some for yourself when that craving for some hot chocolate hits! Satisfies the chocolate craving in a healthy way and warms you up (I can never get the chill out of my body in the winter!) If you remember, last year I shared my Healing Tahini Hot Chocolate recipe; there's even this decadent vegan white hot chocolate recipe to try out! This one, my friends, is just as perfect and super kid-friendly too!

This sounds so much more delicious than that packaged stuff. I've noticed that flavors have been sugared up and concentrations are lost lately. Making things from scratch does wonders for the pallet. I'm looking forward to trying this.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
I haven't had the ole packets in years, but I'm assuming you're right! Those classic products always lose their appeal over the years :/

Hot chocolate is my beverage of choice during this time of year. I didn't know marshmallow bits were a thing, but I feel like I need to get in on this action. Also, your mom's Cool Whip trick is BRILLIANT! I can't wait to try it.

I can’t believe you didn’t like marshmallows! Now, as and adult, I like whipped cream better than marshmallows in cocoa, but as a kid? Marshmallows alllll the way lol
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Well, the mini dissolving ones were...;)

I need to get my hands on some of that coconut milk powder and start making my own hot chocolate mix. I have no idea why I haven't made from scratch before - much better to know all of the ingredients.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
It is a mug of magic!! I'm so glad they MAKE coconut milk powder!
Trish
Do what??? I didn't know you could buy those little marshmallows from the Swiss Miss packets.. My son's love those packets and I have to admit too, they are pretty good. But nothing is better than making your own. I always used cool whip on top of mine as well. Why is it that Hot Chocolate will always bring the kid out in you? 🙂
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Isn't that awesome? Haha! If only I had that as a kid!! I would have eaten them straight up!
