Ingredients For Blueberry Chia Jam
- Blueberries: Plump, antioxidant-rich, fiber-packed sweet blueberries! Fresh in-season or frozen berries work! Cultivated standard blueberries or small wild blueberries, whatever you can get your hands on.
- Chia Seeds:ย Wholeย chia seeds are used to thicken this homemade jam without the need for sugar, fillers, or gums. They provide a dose of plant-based protein and omega-3s!
- Sweetener: I did not use sweetener, however, you can add stevia or liquid sweetener of choice to suit your preference for a sweeter jam.
Fresh Or Frozen Blueberries
The best blueberries to use are the ones that are in season! Whether that's a bushel of fresh berries you just picked at your local farm or wild blueberries that were frozen at peak freshness! Since the only flavor in this jam is blueberry, you want to make sure you're using top-notch quality blueberries for this simple jam! If you end up using frozen blueberries, you may need to cook the jam slightly longer due to the extra liquid and juices the berries may release.
Are Wild Blueberries Healthier Than Regular?
Blueberries are healthy, period. However, it's been shown that wild blueberries contain higher levels of antioxidants, polyphenols, and anthocyanins than regular blueberries.
Optional Sweetener
If you prefer a sweeter jam, like the store-bought varieties you may be used to, or you plan on using the jam in a recipe that calls for a sweeter filling, you can add some extra sweetener! It's also a good idea to taste test a few blueberries before cooking the jam and after making the jam to see if some extra sweetener is called for. You can keep the jam keto and sugar-free by using liquid stevia or monk fruit. You can also opt to use a liquid sweetener like maple syrup, vegan honey, or other liquid sweeteners of choice. You can use granulated sugar if you are cooking the jam on the stove and you plan to add the sugar before cooking, but if you plan to make the jam raw or need to add sugar after the jam has been made, opt for liquid.
How To Make Blueberry Chia Jam
- Give your blueberries a rinse and add them to a large sauce pot (if you're using frozen, add them frozen to the pot, don't defrost.)
- Heat the blueberries over medium-high heat until they soften, release their juices, and begin to bubble. Take a potato masher or wooden spoon and begin to mash the berries.
- Once you're mashed the blueberries to your desired jam consistency, add the chia seeds and optional sweetener.
- Mix everything together and remove the pot from the heat, allowing the jam to thicken as it cools before pouring it into a jar to store in the fridge.
How To Make Raw Blueberry Chia Jam
If you don't want to use heat on your jam, you can mash the blueberries and chia seeds together in a bowl, it will take more work, or mash thawed frozen berries in a bowl with the chia seeds for a quicker raw mash since the blueberries will already be very soft.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- Cover the pot: Speed up the heating process and soften the blueberries quicker by covering the pot until the berries begin to bubble.
- Mashing the blueberries: I use a potato masher because any excess skin from the berries gets caught in the grid of the masher. It's easier to remove this excess fruit pulp and get a perfectly smooth jam without a blender! You can also use the back of a wooden spoon to mash the berries.
- Thickening: This blueberry chia seed jam comes together in 10 minutes but thickens significantly more as it cools and the chia seeds have had a chance to absorb excess liquid. Leaving it overnight in the fridge is ideal.
How To Customize Your Blueberry Jam
- Citrus: Add some zesty tang to balance out the sweetness of the blueberries by addingย 1-2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice, lime juice, or orange juice to your jam! You can also add in some citrus zest as well.
- Vanilla Extract: Add subtle vanilla undertones to your jam, with about 1 teaspoonย ofย vanilla extract to the jam as it cooks! You can also try other flavor extracts as well.
- Use A Combo Of Fruits: Pair your blueberries with some other fruits like raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, kiwis, cherries, peaches, pineapples, or nectarines!
- Add Dried Spices: Add a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, or allspice.
How Long Does Blueberry Chia Seed Jam Last?
Store leftovers of the jam covered in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Chia seed jams are not shelf-stable and SHOULD NOT be canned, nor stored at room temperature. There are no preservatives in this quick homemade jam.
Can You Freeze It?
Freeze the jam by allowing it to cool completely and storing it in an airtight freezer-safe container or glass jar, leaving room at the top to expand, for 6-8 months. You can thaw the jam overnight in the fridge when you're ready to use it.
Ways To Use Blueberry Chia Seed Jam
For breakfast, you can add this healthy blueberry jam to pancakes, waffles, and French toast! Swirl it into oatmeal and hot cereals. For lunch, you can add it to your peanut butter and jelly sandwich, on a bagel with vegan cream cheese, or on toast.
