Is there anything better than a fresh, hot, fluffy stack of chocolate chip pancakes? When they're gluten-free and vegan there is! This super simple and easy recipe is just like the classic hotcakes you grew up with as a weekend breakfast treat, but now you can make them for your own family, allergen-free, with just 7 ingredients and minimal fuss! Load in your favorite allergen-free chocolate chips and top these pancakes with warm maple syrup or whatever you'd like!
7 Simple Ingredients
You can make these homemade gluten-free and vegan pancakes with pantry staple ingredients!
- Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour: Use your favorite all-purpose gluten-free flour, any kind will work!
- Extra Baking Powder: While all-purpose flours have baking powder, the secret to ultra-fluffy pancakes is EXTRA baking powder!
- Granulated Sweetener: Use any sweetener you'd like. Keep it low-sugar by using something like Swerve.
- Applesauce: You only need one 4 ounce cup of unsweetened applesauce! Those individual cups come out to be a little less than ½ cup. This works as the egg-free binder for these vegan chocolate chip pancakes.
- Non-Dairy Milk: Whatever non-dairy milk you keep in your fridge will do! I always use and buy unsweetened milk.
- Vanilla Extract: What are pancakes without that touch of vanilla?
- Chocolate Chips: The star of the show! You can use dark chocolate chips or semi-sweet chips! I love the Simply Delicious allergen-free line from Nestle Tollhouse! This recipe calls for ½ cup, but we all know...you're probably going to want more than that!
A Classic Gluten-Free Breakfast
Just with those simple ingredients, you have a classic pancake breakfast that's total:
- Gluten-Free
- Vegan
- Allergy-free (Dairy-Free, Soy-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free, Peanut-Free, Wheat-Free, Sesame-Free, Corn-Free, Coconut-Free)
- Low in Sugar or Sugar-Free
- Super Kid-Friendly
- So Quick and Easy
How To Make Chocolate Chip Pancakes From Scratch
- Whisk together your dry ingredients, before adding in the applesauce, milk, and vanilla. Mix the batter just until everything is combined (you don't want to over-mix pancake batter!) A little lumpy is O-K!
- FOLD in the chocolate chips. Gently, so you don't over mix!
- While the batter rests, grease, and pre-heat a non-stick skillet on the stove using medium-high heat, you can also use an electric griddle.
- Use about ¼ cup of pancake batter to make each pancake. Cook for a few minutes until you see small bubbles on the surface, then gently flip the pancake and cook for a few more minutes until nicely golden brown.
- Serve them up hot and fresh with your favorite pancake toppings!
Tips and Tricks
- Let your pancake batter rest! It lets the baking powder do its magic and helps you get nice fluffy pancakes!
- Make sure your skillet is HOT before adding the batter. Never add pancake batter to a cold skillet.
- If you're serving a crowd and want to keep your finished pancakes arm while you finish cooking the rest of the batter, preheat the oven to 200°F and keep the pancakes warm in the oven on a baking sheet!
- If you don't want your chocolate chips to melt into your pancakes, use dark chocolate chips and place them in the fridge before you add them to the batter. This will give you chocolate chip pancakes with chocolate chips that hold their shape better after being cooked.
- If you want to meal prep and freeze your pancakes, let them cool completely on a wire rack, then wrap each pancake individually in wax paper and store them, flat and stacked in a freezer bag, in the freezer.
- To reheat leftover pancakes, you can pop them in the microwave if you're short on time or you can heat them in a toaster oven (or regular oven) at 350°F and allow the pancakes to evenly warm and edges to crisp up.
Topping Ideas
You can top these chocolatey hotcakes however you want! But, if you need some unique ideas to try...

Mmmm these looks yummy! I like the idea of putting the choccy chips in the fridge first to help stop them melting too much in the pancakes, such a good tip. xx
