A great homemade breakfast recipe you can make-ahead for busy mornings and enjoy by just popping them in the toaster! The kids will love them and so will you! They’re healthy, simple, and low in sugar!
There’s no better way to start that day than with a little bit of chocolate! Chocolate and crispy homemade waffles sound like a perfect way to put some pep in your step and guarantee that you’ll have a very good day! These gluten-free chocolate chip waffles are SO easy and quick to make that they don’t have to be reserved only for the weekend. Just like your typical weekday frozen toaster waffles, just homemade and 10x better! Of course, these waffles are gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-free too; move aside Eggo! We have a perfect and much healthier chocolatey waffle replacement on our hands!
Ingredients for chocolate chip waffles
You want these quick and easy, right? That means the ingredient list is simple, short, and full of gluten-free pantry staples!
- All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Vanilla Extract
- Sweetener
- Applesauce
- Allergy-Free Mini Chocolate Chips
That’s it! And water…but I’m hoping you have access to a sink! You may be asking, “why use baking powder and baking soda when I’m already using an all-purpose flour?” The additional baking powder and baking soda add EXTRA fluff and crispiness to your waffles! If you ask me, that’s the 2 most important characteristics of a good homemade waffle!
How to make homemade chocolate chip waffles
I always say waffles are easier to make than pancakes. Why? YOU don’t have to do any of the cooking! Your waffle maker does all the hard work for you! So if you aren’t the best pancakes fliper, waffles are the way to go! All you have to do for these gluten-free vegan chocolate chip waffles…
- Heat up your waffle maker.
- Mix your dry and then your wet ingredients together, chocolate chips last!
- Pour batter onto waffle maker, close the lid, and let it do its waffle magic!
- Remove from the waffle maker, drench in syrup, more chocolate chips, etc. and devour!
Options for making mini or large waffles
The waffles you see in the photos were made on my DASH mini waffle iron. The mini waffle iron gives you 4 waffles from the recipe. You can also use a standard Belgium waffle maker. This will give you 2 waffles from the recipe.
Make waffles ahead of time
If you want to increase the recipe and batch cook waffles ahead of time, you can do that! After you finish cooking the waffles, allow them to cool on a wire rack (like a typical baked good!), to bring them to room temperature. You don’t want soggy waffles by cooling them on a plate or creating excess moisture by wrapping them too early, thus creating icy sadness in the freezer! You can store the cooled waffles, in a container, in the fridge for 3-4 days if you plan on using them quickly during the week!
How to freeze homemade waffles
Take your cooked and cooled waffles and wrap each waffle individually in wax paper (or foil). Store these wrapped waffles in a large freezer bag. Frozen waffles can be kept for 3-4 months for optimal results.
How to reheat frozen waffles
EASY! Just like typical store-bought frozen toast waffles, you can simply unwrap and pop your homemade frozen waffles right in your gluten-free toaster! Let them toast and crispy up just to your liking. You can also toast them up in your toaster oven or standard oven too. Just set the temperature to 350°F and bake the waffles on a lined baking sheet for about 10-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until crisp!
How to keep waffles warm
If you’re making a big batch of these chocolate chip waffles for a weekend brunch, you can turn on your oven to heat at 200°F and place your cooked waffles on a wire rack, atop a baking sheet, and keep them warm AND crisp while you finish up all the waffles!
The secret to crispy waffles
On that note, the most important thing you can do to ensure crispiness from the start is to make sure your waffle iron is well greased and HOT! Let that baby heat up all the way! Most waffle irons have a nifty little light that will tell you when it’s ready for you to add the batter. LIVE by the light! Kind of the same with not using a hot pan when making pancakes. Besides a super hot waffle iron, I told you earlier that the extra baking soda adds crispiness. Don’t leave it out!
How to top chocolate chip waffles
I told you these gluten-free chocolate chip waffles were low-sugar. They are! The only added sugar is the allergy-free mini chocolate chips. Depending on the toppings you choose though, that may change. But, I have a few low and no sugar suggestions you can serve alongside these healthier waffles!
- More allergy-free mini chocolate chips
- Sugar-free maple syrup
- Sugar-free chocolate stevia syrup
- Powdered erythritol
- …or the REAL deal!
You don’t have to worry about giving yourself or your kids a sugar crash an hour after having breakfast! These are not your typical chocolate chip waffles for breakfast! They’re just enough sweetness and chocolaty-ness to satisfy and make everyone happy!
