An easy and healthy copycat recipe for your favorite bold-flavored tortilla chip snack! Homemade Vegan Doritos in classic "nacho cheese" flavor that are gluten-free, allergy-free, and baked instead of fried! Addicting, crunchy, and great for parties!
Is it possible? Can you actually enjoy your favorite crunchy, cheesy, tortilla chip junk food without all the fat, oil, salt, sugar, and dairy? Those nostalgic memories of munching through a bag of Doritos and licking the nacho cheese dust off your fingers. Whether it was part of your school lunch snacking with friends, mindlessly munching away during a movie, or while cheering on your favorite sports team in your living room, everyone has some Doritos-eating memories!
Are Doritos gluten-free?
Honestly, this question hadn't crossed my mind since I personally don't snack and everyone knows Doritos are not vegan so, Doritos have not been picked up and inspected by me in many years. But, low and behold, Doritos are gluten-free. Doritos are just corn chips with a whole host of flavor and seasonings. The original Nacho Cheese flavor contains dairy (and a lot of it) though, plus tons of artificial and manmade chemical nonsense. Not safe for those of us with dairy allergies (nor vegans) and an unhealthy "snack" for anyone. To clean up the ingredient list, I whipped up a quick and easy "nacho cheese" powder that you'll use to make these vegan Doritos. Because CHEESE is the most important flavor for these chips, you know I broke out the NOOCH, aka nutritional yeast!
How do you make vegan Doritos?
These vegan Doritos are SO easy! Not only are they vegan, but they're gluten-free, allergy-free, sugar-free, and BAKED! You'll be mixing up a quick dairy-free nacho cheese powder for coating the baked chips, but for the actual chip, you'll use "street taco style" mini corn tortillas! These are the best and the ones I used. (If you want to make this recipe 100% from scratch, make your own gluten-free corn tortillas with this recipe!)
You simply take a stack of mini corn tortillas, cut them three times to make a total of 6 triangles per tortilla, spray with some coconut oil, and bake at 350°F for 5-7 minutes on both sides. When you take them out of the oven you spray both sides of the crunchy chips again and toss them in the bowl of "nacho cheese" seasoning!
What spices are in the vegan "nacho cheese" Doritos seasoning?
You will be making the dairy-free seasoning with nutritional yeast, smoked paprika, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and you can add chipotle powder (if you want extra spice) and/or tomato powder if you have them on hand! Honestly, this nacho cheese powder is perfect to have on hand for sprinkling on anything, not just when you're making homemade Doritos! It would be killer on some popcorn or used for seasoning on pretzels, nuts, snack mixes, etc! Someone should just pack it up and sell it like they do with ranch seasoning mixes!
Are Doritos a party food or everyday snack?
Well, these healthy homemade vegan Doritos can be breakfast is you really wanted to get crazy! They're whole grain, packed with nutritional yeast vitamins, minerals, and protein! Perfect for party food snacking, gameday munching, movie watching, packed in a lunchbox, taken to work, an afterschool snack, or midnight munchie! These copycat Doritos last a few weeks if you store them properly in a sealing container or bag. You can prep a large batch of these chips and portion them out into snack bags for grab-and-go (or pack) crunchy side snack options for those school or work lunches or long car rides! (Skip the store-bought!)
