I see you. I hear you. Scouring the store shelves for a teriyaki sauce that fits all your food allergy needs. It can't be THAT hard to find SOMETHING...right? It kinda is and that's why we're taking things into our own hands. This homemade teriyaki sauce is not only allergy-free, but it's healthier, cheaper, and can be whipped up a lot quicker than running out to the store just to cure that classic Asian sauce craving!
How To Make Homemade Teriyaki Sauce
Or, should we say "free-from" teriyaki sauce? This homemade sauce may be healthy and free from allergens, but anyone (and I mean ANYONE) can and should give this delicious sauce a go! It's so easy, natural, and not packed with sugars, sodium, and preservatives.
What's in it:
- Coconut Aminos
- Pineapple Juice
- Rice Vinegar
- Sweeteners (Erythritol)
- Chili Paste
- Minced Garlic
- Ginger
- Arrowroot Starch
Mix all the ingredients together in a large pot and allow it to simmer on the stove to thicken up a bit. Let it cool completely before you store it! This recipe will give you about 2 cups of sauce. If you're going to use the sauce right away as a marinade, in a slow cooker or instant pot, you don't even have to cook it!
Keeping it free-from:
- Gluten-Free
- Dairy-Free
- Nut-Free
- Peanut-Free
- Egg-Free
- Corn-Free
- Sesame-Free
- Fish-Free
- Shellfish-Free
- Grain-Free
- Paleo
- Vegan
- Sugar-Free
- Oil-Free
The best substitute for soy sauce
Teriyaki sauce typically contains SOY (soy sauce) and WHEAT, GLUTEN (again in the soy sauce). Plus, if we look at the back of a Kikkoman bottle there's MSG, other weird things, corn syrup, and sodium through the roof. Not safe for those of us with soy allergies or celiac disease. Coconut aminos are the easiest way to make a soy-free teriyaki sauce, it's gluten-free and paleo as well.
How to thicken your teriyaki sauce
You don't need cornstarch to thicken this sauce! By using arrowroot starch which is a great corn-free, allergy-friendly, and paleo swap for corn starch, we get just the amount of sauce thickening we need but keep it gluten and grain-free as well. You can add more or less depending on just how thick you want the sauce. This will also depend on the recipe you're using the sauce for! Marinades can be looser, while a glaze for meats should be thicker.
Is teriyaki sauce sugar-free?
No, but we can make it sugar-free! By that, I mean naturally sweet without corn syrup, brown sugar, etc. By using pineapple juice this sauce has a sweet and tangy taste that's boosted by brown sugar style and traditional granulated Swerve (i.e. Erythritol). Calorie-free and sugar-free, low-carb and paleo.
How long will it last?
Store your homemade teriyaki sauce in an airtight (preferably glass) jar or bottle in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. If you want to make a big batch all in one go, I suggest freezing it in an ice cube tray and allowing the sauce cubes to defrost as needed (or added directly to whatever you're cooking!)
How to use homemade teriyaki sauce
You can use it as a flavoring sauce for any Asian dish or "Asian-Inspired" dish, as a marinade for vegetables or meats, to either roast or grill, in the slow cooker, make it thicker and use it as a glaze, add a splash to a dish you want to add some flavor too, like stir-frys, rice, noodles, etc. Also, try it as a dip for things like sushi!
