Just when you thought I couldn’t get any crazier with my recreations! The classic and traditional Christmas holiday beverage was just begging to be made “free-from” and enjoyable for all! Let me start off by saying I’ve always hated eggnog for as long as I can remember (even when I wasn’t egg-free). My brother always loved it growing up, still does, but me? Heck no! But eggnog is SUCH a holiday “thing”. My grandpa would always offer us eggnog the moment we walked in the door at my grandparent’s house on Christmas Eve (I always denied the offer, haha!)
The thing is, vegan versions of certain recipes are actually 100x more appealing and delicious. And a perfect example is this “eggnog”, or what I like to call “hempnog”. This nifty little drink recipe is 100% homemade. How you may ask? Well, let me introduce you to one of my new favorite appliances. So you can say I am now obsessed with making my own alternative milks and butters! It’s so easy now (no going back to the old methods)! Since the holidays are upon us, I knew I had to take this opportunity and make this obsession useful, i.e. the NOG had to happen! You and I, we can all partake in the “nogging” festivities this year. Don’t worry, if you never liked eggnog before, like me, I guarantee you will LOVE this version!
This “hempnog”, vegan eggnog, is a combination of fresh hemp milk, Japanese sweet potato (for extra creaminess and sweetness!), and some cozy spices and sweetener. It’s the perfect level of creaminess and smoothness, with just the right amount of sweet, but also warming and cozy with those seasonal spices (hello, cinnamon and nutmeg)! There is no gluten, soy, nuts, dairy, or eggs in right here, making it perfectly vegan, gluten-free, paleo, and top-8 allergy-free! If this isn’t a Christmas miracle…I don’t know what is!
Homemade Vegan Eggnog (Hempnog)
- 1 Cup Raw Hemp Hearts
- 1 Cup Mashed Japanese Sweet Potato Flesh (loosely packed)
- ¼ Cup Erythritol
- ½ Tsp Pure Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Extract
- ½ Tsp Cinnamon
- ½ Tsp Nutmeg
- 4 Cups Cold Water
- Add all the ingredients (except the water) into The Nutramilk.
- First, use the "butter" function and let blend for 3 minutes.
- Now add the 4 cups of water to the unit, set to mix for one minutes.
- Now simply dispense the liquid from the unit.
- Top each glass with extra nutmeg or cinnamon if desired!
The way Wikipedia defines eggnog (they call it milk punch or egg milk punch) is “traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, whipped egg whites and egg yolks”. No wonder that wasn’t ever appealing to me! But guess what guys, this “hempnog”/vegan eggnog has none of the scary things and is perfectly fresh, healthy, and delicious!
