Just like grandma used to make! This is the best Old-Fashioned Vegan Baked Beans recipe! They're sweet, smoky, gluten-free, top 8 allergy-free, and baked right in your cast iron skillet!
These baked beans are a game-changer! Who else grew up eating those Campbell's canned "pork and beans"? I'm raising my hand up high here! Don't be embarrassed; we all ate them. My mom would even doctor them up by adding extra sugary pancake syrup and ketchup to them! It was a side dish essential during the summer, anytime we had something on the grill for dinner.
So, I didn't grow-up with any old-fashioned baked beans, let alone vegan ones. BUT, that's not stopping me now. My brother still eats the 'ole canned variety and I had such a craving for them. Here's another kicker though, Campbell's baked beans actually say "May Contain Wheat". Not only are you getting a dose of high fructose corn syrup, but my celiac folks will be in for a gluten-attack (it's most likely from the "modified food starch" in the ingredient list).
Run and hide, guys! As you can see we really needed some allergy-free, gluten-free, vegan, baked beans STAT! I have an old recipe for baked beans on the blog, but it doesn't even stand a chance at being as good as these baked beans! These are the REAL deal. Rustic, classic, old-fashioned, sweet and smoky! Of course that means these beans are baked in the cast iron skillet. The sweetness is coming from molasses, maple syrup, and dark brown sugar (real sugar in this recipe!) The smokiness is of course from a good dose of smoked paprika. As you can imagine...these smell like a million bucks when cooking!
My favorite part about these delicious baked beans is that you only need that one cast iron skillet. You saute the onion, beans, and saucy ingredients on the stove-top before you pop it in the oven to finish off. Not need for extra pots and pans in this recipe! The beans are so soft and melt-in-your-mouth when they come out of the oven! An essential side dish to any bbq, cookout, potluck, or grilling meal you may have planned!

I am dreaming about the sweet and smoky aroma now! These may be dangerous and you make just end up eating the entire skillet of baked beans yourself, so I'd recommend double-batching this recipe! If you do have the willpower to keep these old-fashioned vegan baked beans as a side dish, you may want to serve them along side some cauliflower steaks, veggie burgers, or some perfectly grilled chicken if you aren't actually vegan 😉
So tell me:
+ Canned "baked beans" or legit old-fashioned homemade baked beans?

ANything that only requires one cooking instrument is always good news for me. 🙂 Putting my hand up for one of many who was fed processed baked beans, but in our case it was Bachelors Baked Beans rather than Campbells. (I grew up in Ireland) 🙂

Haha, I think it's time to experience the REAL deal now 😉
