A cozy Raw Winter Kasha Porridge for when you're looking for some wholesome nourishment to start your day! With seasonal flavors and homemade cranberry sauce, this gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-free breakfast is sure to be a new favorite!
I told you that you'd be seeing the Roasted Apple & Cranberry Sauce in action! What better way to use it the next morning than in some breakfast porridge! Some raw winter kasha porridge to be exact! It's gluten-free, allergy-free, vegan, and of course, RAW! No cooking! I have always been intrigued by the "raw porridge" phenomenon that all the hardcore vegan/raw dieters do, so why not give it a shot!
We all love a morning bowl of warm creamy porridge (i.e. any hot cereal that is!) From oatmeal, quinoa flakes, buckwheat cereal, creamy rice, or any grain! With this kasha porridge being raw, it's not "warm", but more like overnight oats! You soak the whole grain kasha the night before and then blend it up in a blender! Remeber, kasha is buckwheat, just toasted for more flavor.
It's definitely a fun breakfast to try out and really switch things up. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my breakfast rotation. I do like to try new things, but my staples will always be cold cereal, hot cereal, or of course, the mighty pancake! This semester in school, I have been ALL about cold cereal. It's pretty embarrassing the amount of boxes I go through. Every time I hit up the grocery store, cereal is always on the list.
Can we talk about the serving size suggestion on those nutrition labels? There are a few foods that I KNOW must have lies and false facts. Cereal and nut butter. There is no way either of those are ever accurate! Do you know how little 2 tablespoons of peanut butter is? Or ¾ cup of dry cereal!? Are you kidding me! That's literally impossible with cereal! Cereal also doesn't keep you very full for long either. So yes, I can see where some people get into trouble with cereal consumption (luckily I don't have to worry...well maybe my wallet does!)
The only person I know who eats an actual serving or so of cereal is my mom....I just don't understand that woman! She also doesn't mix cereals. I, however, never have a
mono-bowl". You can rest assured that my cereal bowl is a combo of at least 2 types, but usually 3 or 4! I do this for a few reasons. One is to bulk it up with a "healthier" or single grain cereal mixed then with a sugary "fun" one. The other reason is, this mixing majorly cuts down of decision making. You get to have ALL the cereals with a little taste of each!
Why on Earth am I talking about boxed cereal when I'm sharing a raw porridge recipe with you today? I have no clue...I guess if boxed cereal isn't your thing or you want something more sustaining, then this kasha porridge may just make up for some cold crunchy sugary cereal! This porridge is no-cook, cold, slightly crunchy (depending on how much you blend!) and o so naturally sweet! It's wholesome and nourishing and may just fill you up for longer than 30 minutes 😉

O wait! I know! I actually broke out a blender for this one! I still need to figure out eBay and sell a few of the 7 blenders that I have and don't use (and none of which I've bought except for one!) Major fail or major win? What for sure is a win is this raw winter kasha porridge! So start soaking and know you'll have one fabulous wintery breakfast on you hands in the morning! You can blend this up the day before too or make a big batch. Whatever is easier and more accessible for delicious to greet you upon waking!
So tell me:

My little ones all have porridge every single day, but theirs is bland in comparison to your bright colourful bowl of oats goodness. Must try!

Rebecca, I have not tried Kasha, it looks so tasty with the cranberry sauce and dried fruit. I am always looking for warm meals in the fall and winter. It helps to warm me up from the inside out. I will be looking for Kasha, excited to try it!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
If you try this warm, let me know.
Audrey
I am with your mom on not mixing cereal. I'd rather have two mini-bowls than one combined. My son is on your side though, ha ha! Love that you added the cranberry sauce to this. YUM!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
What! No! Mix, mix!!!

Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine

Courtney
This looks so filling and flavorful! I need to buy some kasha now. 🙂
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Yes! You'll have fun with it!
Nicole Dawson
SO funny Rebecca how you like to mix your cereals! I have a few that I will mix together (but only because the kids left trace amount in the containers). I have yet to make kasha like this, so it looks like one I need to add to my list.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Your kids sound like my mom 😛 She leaves trace amounts as well and it kills me so I'm always finishing off her boxes!
Joyce @ The Hungry Caterpillar
I've never tried kasha, but I do have some raw buckwheat in my pantry. I love the idea of topping hot porridge with cranberry sauce!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
O this isn't hot, it's a raw overnight porridge!

Alisa @ Go Dairy Free
I love things made with buckwheat, but have never tried kasha like this. I'll have to try it post-Thanksgiving!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Kasha is a great one to try then!
Mandy
I am SO intrigued by this recipe! I definitely like the looks and sounds of it - especially with that cranberry sauce of yours 🙂 I went through a phase of eating overnight oats and before I realized that oats and my gut weren't friends, I learned that I preferred a bowl of hot oatmeal...but the convenience of the overnight/raw oats or cereal is SO nice! haha!!!! Seriously, the serving sizes make me laugh. I have a sister in law who is super strict with serving sizes and will actually count the number of pistachios - I just can't do that!
I'm liking the idea of mixing up the cereals in one bowl, why haven't I done that before?? And yes, my breakfast routine changes come fall and winter...I need my warm comfort food! xo
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
I feel like oatmeal is a serving size lie too 😛 So many foods are! It's not reality! Those standards were set in the 1970s!
You only ever eat one at a time!? WAH!!! How can you even begin to make that hard decision!
Nayna Kanabar
This sounds like an interesting grain, its not one I have tried before.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Kasha is a wonderful version of buckwheat!

Sharon @ What The Fork
I'm with you on the mixed cereal - at least 2 kinds of cereal and if I don't have 2 kinds, then at least 2 kinds of fruit haha.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
It has to be interesting!!! And I can just never decide on ONLY one!
Chrystal @ Gluten-Free Palate
I've never tried Kasha! You make it look so good 🙂

I'm honestly not much of a breakfast person, I see cereal as more of a snack, but your pictures make me want to dig in!

I still haven't tried an overnight cereal bowl. It's on my list of things to try. Is the kasha soaked at room temp or in the fridge? The flavor combinations that you used here would be perfect for my son who LOVES cranberries.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Room temp! No need to take up fridge space 😉
Shashi at RunninSrilankan
Rebecca - I so love your reasoning on combining 3-4 cereals in your bowl! 🙂
I am not a cereal in a bowl kinda gal, but cereal in a muffin or pancake - heck yeah!
As for this - such a uniue and tasty porridge!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Haha, cereal in a pancake? I'll have to get on that train!
Faith (An Edible Mosaic)
I have half a bag of kasha in my pantry that I've been wondering how to use! And I just whipped up a batch of my homemade cranberry-apple sauce (a seasonal staple in my house!), so I need to make this happen soon. It looks delicious!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
Ooo don't you love it when the food-stars align!?

what a healthy way to start the day
