Ingredients For Applesauce Chicken

  • Skinless Boneless Chicken Breasts: Just plain lean chicken breasts are all you need for this easy recipe! Lean and healthy protein that just soaks up the sweetness and moisture from the applesauce. If you want to use skinless boneless chicken thighs you can give that a try as well for a more prominent chicken flavor.
  • Applesauce: Let's get real, we're going to use Slow Cooker Applesauce! My homemade slow cooker applesauce is perfect to use for this chicken recipe! If you want to make this recipe right now without the applesauce prep, you can use plain store-bought unsweetened applesauce too! Smooth or chunky works; whichever you prefer!
  • Additional Spices: To jazz up the flavor profile ever so slightly, you can add a dash of black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and cinnamon to make this slow cooker chicken dinner even more aromatic, warm, and cozy for a fall or winter night!

How To Make Slow Cooker Applesauce Chicken

  1. Add the raw chicken breasts into the Crockpot or slow cooker.
  2. Pour the applesauce over the chicken to cover and add any spices you'd like.
  3. CoverΒ theΒ slow cooker and cook the chicken on low for 5-6 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
  4. Uncover the slow cooker and serve the chicken breasts whole or use two forks to shred the chicken in the applesauce before serving.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

  • The applesauce will thin out as it cooks. That's okay! That's why it makes a perfect sauce to spoon over the chicken and will keep leftovers juicy and moist.
  • If you are using chicken thighs, you may need to cook them slightly longer. Make sure all chicken reaches 165Β°F.
  • Make sure you use unsweetened applesauce. This dish is meant to be naturally subtly sweet.
  • The ratio is 1 cup of applesauce to 1 pound of chicken. Keep this ratio the same if you plan on batch cooking.

Storage & Freezer Instructions

  • Storing Leftovers: Once the applesauce chicken has cooled, store leftovers in a closed container in the fridge for 4-5 days. You can also freeze leftover cooked chicken for up to 6 months.
  • ReheatingΒ  Leftovers: To reheat cooked leftovers add the chicken to a pot on the stove or in the microwave until the chicken is hot throughout. The chicken can also be warmed in the oven at 350Β°F in a baking dish until the chicken reaches 165Β°F. Reheating it with extra applesauce will keep your chicken from drying out.
  • Freezer Meal Prep: Make this chicken a freezer meal by adding the raw chicken and applesauce to a freezer storage bag and freezing it flat in your freezer for up to 6 months. When you're ready to cook, take the bag out and allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight before dumping the bag contents into your slow cooker and following the cooking instructions.

How To Serve Applesauce Chicken

Serve your Crockpot applesauce chicken with the applesauce liquid it was cooked in or extra warmed applesauce. You can keep the chicken breasts whole or use two forks to shred the chicken for pulled slow cooker applesauce chicken that's great on potato buns or over mashed potatoes (like stroganoff!)Β Serve it with other healthy side dishes like:

  • Rustic Mashed Potatoes
  • Mashed Sweet Potatoes
  • Celery Root Mash (Mashed Celeriac)
  • Air Fryer Green Beans
  • Classic American Coleslaw
  • Oven Roasted Carrots

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2Β lbs of Skinless, Boneless Chicken Breasts
  • 2 Cups Plain Unsweetened Applesauce

Optional Add-ins:

  • Β½ TspΒ Onion Powder
  • Β½TspΒ Garlic Powder
  • ΒΌ TspΒ Black Pepper
  • ΒΌ Tsp Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Add the raw chicken breasts into your Crockpot or slow cooker.
  2. Pour the applesauce over the chicken to cover and add any additional spices you'd like.

  4. Uncover the slow cooker and serve the chicken breasts whole or use two forks to shred the chicken in the applesauce before serving.

Notes

  • Storage: You can store leftover applesauce chicken, once cooled (shredding the chicken cools it quicker) in the fridge in a closed container for 4-5 days.
  • Freezing: To freeze leftovers, allow the chicken to cool, shredding it helps cool it quicker, and store it in a freezer bag or airtight container for up to 4-5 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge. To make a freezer meal, add the raw chicken breasts applesauce, and additional spices, to a freezer bag and freeze flat. Allow the bag to thaw overnight in the fridge before adding it to your slow cooker.
  • Reheating: You can reheat leftovers in the microwave until warmed through, sauteed in a pan on the stove, or warmed in the oven at 350Β°F in a baking dish until the chicken reaches 165Β°F. Add extra applesauce to leftovers to keep it from drying out.

I'm going to make this for dinner tonight! Sounds really good and simple. Thank you!
I have a question. Do you recommend any particular slow cooker? The crockpot I have now cooks WAY too hot. It's like it's cooking on High when it's set to Low. For instance, my chicken breasts on Low cook in about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I have heard others say the same thing about their slow cookers, so I'm trying to find one that won't cook too hot.

Yes. This one has been bad from the day I bought it, so I'm trying to find some suggestions for brands or particular ones that have worked well for others. My old crockpot cooked very low and slow, but my current one never has.

    Hi Rebecca,
This sounds like a delightful recipe and so easy. I have been cooking for most of my life, and I am 63 now, but for years now, my rule has been, If I can't make it in 30 mins. I don't use the recipe. I used to make these recipes that sometimes took hours or the day, and after smelling it all that time, when it came time to eat it........it was like Yuk or else it wasn't worth all the time invested, and at my age, easy is wonderful...........cause I have other things I want to
do with my time than cook..........lol
and yes, I do like to use the crock pot at times...........
Also Cracker Barrel restaurants used to make an applefest chicken recipe years ago in the Fall, that was to die for,
so am hoping this tastes like it, cause we had it that one Fall and they never had it again for some reason.

    You take care,
    Blessings, Nellie

I'd never have thought of this! I love pork and applesauce, but for some reason having it with chicken never occurred to me. I'll have to try it out when I have access to a slow cooker! πŸ™‚

Right?! Since I only eat chicken now, it's the perfect (and better!) substitute!

This vegan gumbo recipe is still hearty and full-flavored without meat or seafood. Fully plant-based without any mock meat or soy, just whole food ingredients! We are replacing the animal protein with kidney beans, potatoes, and hearts of palm. This trifecta provides meaty textures and protein to the stew, plus reduces the need for extra cooking time since we’re taking the lazy way and using canned ingredients. The roux is made with gluten-free flour and vegan butter for a thick, rich, hearty stew that will stick to your bones.πŸ˜‹πŸ™Œ
