Packed with flavor, super easy, and healthy, this Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken is going to be your new favorite Crock-Pot meal! It's gluten-free, paleo, allergy-free, and doesn't have soy sauce, ketchup or sesame! Great for dinner, lunches, and a better way to meal prep boring chicken breasts!
Sweet, tangy, with just a hint of spice, this slow cooker honey garlic chicken is the best! The classic sticky honey sauce made healthier and allergy-free with no soy sauce, ketchup, or sesame! That means this Crock-Pot chicken is gluten-free, soy-free, sesame-free, and paleo! No refined sugar, besides some pure natural honey. A family-friendly meal that's great for dinner, lunches, and even works for meal-prepping and is freezer-friendly!
How to make the honey garlic sauce
What's in this sticky, sweet, tangy sauce? Only the good stuff you want and nothing that you don't!
- Coconut Aminos (aka: you're allergy-free soy sauce!)
- Pure Real Honey (aka: not the fake stuff with added corn syrup!)
- Tomato Paste (aka: concentrated tomato goodness, not sugary ketchup!)
- Minced Garlic
- Onion Powder
- Chili Paste (aka: gotta add a little spice, right?)
Since we're just tossing this sauce into the slow cooker, along with the chicken, no need to heat it separately. Just mix it all together in a bowl to prep!
Chicken Breasts vs. Chicken Thighs
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't like chicken thighs. BUT, I won't stop you from using them in this recipe. If that's your thing, go for it. However, using chicken breasts is the way to go here. All the flavor you need comes from that killer sauce, so you don't need to worry about plain, bland chicken!
Shredded Chicken vs. Keeping it Whole
The beauty of cooking chicken breasts in the slow cooker is that the meat literally falls apart when done. It also lets you know it is done! Sure, you can scoop out the finished chicken breasts, serve whole, and spoon on extra sauce from the slow cooker. The better way to shred the chicken breasts (or thighs) with two forks right in the Crock-Pot and letting every inch of that chicken get immersed in the yummy honey garlic sauce!
How to serve the honey garlic chicken
Dinner, lunch, sliders? The possibilities for serving this slow cooker chicken are endless!
- Serve it over rice, quinoa, Asian rice noodles, even cauliflower rice
- Make an Asian meal bowl with the shredded chicken and add tons of Asian veggies (add: broccoli, bell peppers, snow peas, cauliflower, etc.)
- Make a big 'ole chicken salad
- Use the shredded chicken on gluten-free buns for sliders or sandwiches
- Great make-ahead protein option to add to your weekly meal prep for lunches
Freezer-Friendly Storage
If you want to prep this chicken as a freezer meal, simply add the mixed sauce with the raw chicken into a large freezer storage bag. Freeze flat in the freezer. To defrost, take it out the night before and place it in the fridge. Then just pour it out into your slow cooker when you're ready to cook!
