Warm-up a snowy winter's day with these adorable Gluten-Free Snowman Sugar Cookies! These easy cut-out sugar cookies are vegan, allergy-free, and so fun to bake and decorate with the kids! With a quick and simple egg-free white icing and candy decorations, these are great for a holiday cookie swap or Christmas dessert!

nine gluten-free snowman sugar cookies

You don't have to be a master cookie decorator to still whip up a batch of these super easy (and adorable) snowman sugar cookies! The easiest gluten-free cut-out sugar cookie with a simple egg-free "royal icing" and edible candy decorations are ideal for baking on those cold snowy winter days! You can make them any time during the season, for any winter holiday, and since they're allergy-free, everyone can enjoy them!

Ingredients You Need

  • Gluten-Free Baking Flour: I like to use a 1 to 1 baking flour for a lighter, sweeter cookie, rather than all-purpose.
  • Baking Powder
  • Commercial Egg Replacer: Any powdered egg replacer will do!
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Granulated Sugar Sweetener: Use your favorite granulated sugar or sweetener.
  • Vegan/Allergy-Free Butter: You just need 1 full stick of your favorite allergy-free butter.
  • Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk

White (and Black) Icing & Decorations

  • Powdered Sugar Sweetener: Use your favorite powdered sugar or sweetener.
  • Water
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Natural Black Food Coloring
  • Corn Syrup*: This is 100% optional, but a small dab of corn syrup will make your icing dry with a shiny sheen.
  • Snowman Sprinkle Decorations: I used a sprinkle set from Wilton. You can use whatever allergy-free decorations you can find.

Making Your Cut-Out Snowman Cookies

  1. Mix your dry ingredients together, then add in the cold butter and wet ingredients. Knead the dough with your hands and then let it chill for at least 30 minutes so your cookies won't spread!
  2. Once the dough is nice and cold, roll it out to about ¼-inch thickness (you can roll a bit thinner for a crispier cookie or thicker for a softer cookie). Then use a snowman-shaped cookie cutter and cut out as many snowmen as possible with the dough. The amount will vary depending on the size of your cookie cutter.
  3. Then bake the cookies at 350°F for about 10 minutes, until they are just slightly golden around the edges. Time may vary depending on the thickness of your cookies!
  4. Then let them cool on a wire rack completely before you decorate!

Check out the video for visual tips!

Decorating The Snowmen

Simple White and Black Icing:

  1. Start with your powdered sugar and add just enough water for the icing to be thick, but spreadable. It should be able 1 tablespoon per cup of sugar.
  2. Scoop out a few spoonfuls of the white icing into another small bowl and add some black food coloring for the snowman hat.
  3. You can add a tiny dab of light corn syrup to your icings if you want the cookies to have that nice shine to them when dry.

Once you have the icings mixed, you can either spread them onto the cookies or, using an icing decorator or small squeeze bottle, outline the cookie and then flood the cookie with white icing to fill. This is the easiest way to add a small portion of black icing for the hat too. While the white icing is still wet, add black candy eyes, buttons, and a nose!

Great For Any Winter Holiday

Whether you bake these up as a fun and cozy winter weekend baking project with the kids or for your holiday cookie swap, these snowmen cookies are perfect for any cold-weather occasion! They're completely:

  • Gluten-Free
  • Vegan
  • Allergy-free (Dairy-Free, Soy-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free, Peanut-Free, Wheat-Free, Sesame-Free, Corn-Free, Coconut-Free)
  • Low in Sugar
  • Kid-Friendly
  • Quick and Easy

Your decorated vegan cookies will be best if eaten within 2 weeks at room temperature in a sealed container. (Note: The dyes in the candy and sprinkles you use will probably bleed into the white icing after a few days). You can also freeze undecorated cookies for about 6 months for best results! Thaw them in the fridge before decorating as normal!

Ingredients

Scale

Snowman Sugar Cookies:

  • 2 Cups Gluten-Free Baking Flour
  • ½ Tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 Cup Granulated Sweetener (or preferred granulated sugar)
  • 1 Prepared Bob's Red Mill Egg Replacer
  • 1 Tsp Pure Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Stick Vegan/Allergy-Free Butter (cold, cubed)
  • 1 to 2 Tsp Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk (as needed)

Cookie Icing & Decorations:

  • 2 Cups Powdered Sweetener (or preferred powdered sugar)
  • 2 TB Water (as needed)
  • ½ Tsp Pure Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Extract
  • Natural Black Food Coloring (as needed)
  • 1 Tsp Light Corn Syrup* (optional)
  • Snowman Candy Decorations

Instructions

For the Cookies:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and sweetener together.
  2. Add the prepared egg replacement, vanilla extract, and cubed cold butter. Mix everything together and then knead with your hands to break up the butter, until everything is combined. Add teaspoons of milk is needed to get the dough hydrated.
  3. Chill the dough for 30 minutes to 1 hour in the fridge, while you preheat the oven to 350°F.
  4. Roll the chilled dough out between parchment paper to about ¼ inch thickness.
  5. Use a snowman-shaped cookie cutter and cut to cut out as many snowmen as possible with the dough. Reroll the dough as needed.
  6. On a parchment paper or Silpat lined baking sheet, space out the cookies and bake them in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, until they are just golden around the edges.
  7. Remove the cookies and let them cool for 1 to 2 minutes on the baking sheet before cooling completely on a wire rack.

For the Icing & Decorations:

  1. In a bowl, add the powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of water. Mix together until you get a thick but drizzly icing. Add more powdered sugar if it is too runny. Add more water if it is too thick.
  2. Now add the vanilla (and corn syrup if using), mix, and scoop out a few spoonfuls for the black portion.
  3. Mix in just enough drops of black dye to color the white icing.
  4. Use an icing decorator or small squeeze bottle to first outline the cookie and then flood the cookie with icing to fill or simply use the back of a spoon to spread the icing on the cookies.
  5. Before the icing dries, add your chosen candy decorations.
  6. Allow the cookies to set before enjoying or storing in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

*Corn syrup will make your finished cookies have that nice shiny sheen to them. This is 100% optional.

These are such fun cookies, and it's so nice to find a recipe that's already gluten-free. Such a cute frosting pattern and those orange noses really pull it all together.
