Last summer (yea, like 2014), I made this killer sweet potato fries with my lovely Spiralizer
. I got the idea from one of the many gluten-free Facebook groups I'm in. A girl was talking about how she missed those seasoned waffle fries you can buy frozen at the grocery. Most of them are not gluten-free so that creates a problem. When she said this, I started getting the craving for those seasoned waffle fries. I don't even know what the "seasoning" is, but those fries (that I was reminded of), were really good from what I remember. So I was on a mission to remedy this little situation.

Now, I had to idea how to make the waffle shape, but I did have a Spiralizer. I mean, I could have just cut them normal, steak-cut or even just sliced, but I needed to make these fun. So that's where the Spiralizercame in. At that point, I had never spiralized a potato so I was pretty excited to see how it would come out. It worked...very well! Thus, I have spiralized many potatoes since πŸ˜‰

This also confirms that everyone needs a Spiralizerin their life. Don't think it's one of those "useless" space-taker-up kitchen items. They are super fun to use and you can spiralize almost anything. Like beets and of course the famous zoodle.

The only thing I messed up a bit, was the amount of "seasoning". I made my fries a bit too spicy for my taste buds. The mix of spices was perfect, but my mouth was on fire! I didn't measure any of the spices, which means you can use whatever ratio you'd like if you make these. I took it like a man and ate my super spicy fries anyway...with tons of ketchup, which actually helped cool-down the spice factor. Did you know that you shouldn't drink water when your mouth is on fire? It just pushes the spice particles around. But if you drink MILK, that actually grabs, coats, and flushes down the spice particles. So if you make these super spicy, like I did, make sure you have a large cold glass of almond milk by your side πŸ˜‰

Another fun tid-bit about these fries. They are so crispy! Long strings (kinda like shoe-string fries) of crispy baked goodness! They were actually really long, so I suggest snipping them a bit before you bake them since we're making fries here, not sweet potato noodles! But still, I had such a fun time eating these! If you want to amp up your fry-game and wow people at all those upcoming cook-outs, I'd suggest you make these.

  • Author: Rebecca Pytell

  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • Sweet Potatoes (I just used one, but if you're making for a crowd, do so accordingly.)
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Cumin
  • Black Pepper
  • Smoked Paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 415ΒΊF.
  2. Cut the end off each sweet potato before spiralizing. Snip the long strings with a scissor to desired length.
  3. Place the sweet potato strings in a large bowl, add in spices (desired amounts), and toss to coat the strings.
  4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and evenly spread out the sweet potato strings. Bake for 20-30 minutes, careful not to burn.

You can pair these fries with a lovely veggie burger, grilled chicken, what ever. Just be warned, these fries may upstage what is supposed to be the "main event" on the plate. Β But whenever sweet potatoes are involved, they always win. Potato-lover or not, you will be now! Make sure to check back here on Wednesday and I'll have a wonderful "dip" for you to make along with these fires πŸ˜‰ Stay tuned!

So tell me:

+ You know what I'm talking about when I say seasoned waffle fries?

+ Sweet potato fries or regular fries? I don't care, as long as it's a potato!

Can't wait to try these! BTW, if you cut the potato half way through, that will make the spirals shorter. Saves time cutting them later!

I've been wanting to make some spiralizer fries for awhile now. Maybe I'll finally get around to it after reading your post. I feel like judging seasoning can be hard at first, I try to start off as bland as possible and than work my way up. (But, then again I have irate intestines, so I like to keep them happy too.) Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for bringing these to FF!

What a brilliant idea - love those sweet potato fries and the ingredients in them make me want them all the more. I've seen the spiralizers before, but I don't have any more space for gadgets :)......so I found this tiny gadget that looks like a potato peeler, only it is one that shreds veggies and makes them like noodles, of course not half as fancy schmancy as the spiralizer, but I definitely will use it to try this recipe πŸ™‚

I don't use my spiralizer enough. These look amazing and I am pleasantly surprised they got crispy without any oil. Can't wait to give them a try.

This will get you using it then! They are so thin you don't need any oil!

Curly fries in general. It takes me back to the curly fries at Arby's which were so freaking good. Why does everything in a spiral taste amazing???

omg. You have done 2 things. 1. Convinced me to perhaps consider a spiralizer. 2. Reconsider my thoughts on sweet potatoes! You should do this with a white potato πŸ˜‰

I am actually shocked you don't have a spiralizer yet! You MUST get one! I know you would have so much fun with it!
I will make normal potato fries then....if you make sweet potato ones!
