Ingredients For Strawberry Chia Jam
- Strawberries: Fresh, juicy, naturally sweet strawberries. They are the flavor, fiber, antioxidant-rich super berry that is the star of this chia jam!
- Chia Seeds: Whole chia seeds are what thickens this homemade jam without the need for sugar, fillers, or gums. They also provide a nice dose of plant protein and omega-3s!
- Sweetener: More on this below, but if you're using fresh in-season berries you don't need to add sweetener. You can, however, add some stevia or liquid sweetener of choice to suit your palette.
Fresh or Frozen Strawberries
Fresh strawberries are your best choice if it's peak strawberry season and those babies are at their sweet, ripe, juicy, optimal perfection. Just rinse, slice, and add them to your pot. However, if you're making this jam not during strawberry season, frozen strawberries are 100% fine to use! If you're using frozen berries you can simply add them frozen to the pot and mash them as they get heated. Using frozen berries may take longer since they'll need to thaw out and will have more liquid to cook off.
No Sugar Added
You don't need to add sugar to this recipe. You can keep it completely refined sugar-free or sweeten it to taste with a sugar-free sweetener or your choice of liquid sweetener. If the strawberries are sweet enough you won't need it. It also depends on your tastebuds. if you're used to sugary jams and jellies, you may need to ease yourself into the lower-sugar jams. To keep the jam low-carb and keto, use a few drops of stevia or monk fruit. You can also use liquid sweeteners like maple syrup, honey, vegan honey, etc. If you use granulated sweetener, make sure to add it while the berries are still cooking so the sugar melts.
How To Make Strawberry Chia Jam
- Rinse, remove the green hull, and slice your strawberries before adding them to a sauce pot. Heat them over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.e
- When the strawberries begin to release their juices, break down, and bubble, use a potato masher or large spoon to mash the strawberries to your desired consistency.
- Once the strawberries are mashed, stir in the chia seeds and taste the mixture to see if it needs sweetener.
- Remove the jam from the heat and allow it to cool and thicken before giving it a final stir and pouring it into a jar to store for later.
Can You Make Strawberry Jam Raw?
If you want to make raw chia jam, without the use of heat, you'll need to slice and mash the berries in a bowl. If you use frozen, it's easier to thaw the berries and mash. You will need to drain off some of the excess liquid since you're not cooking the berries and the flavor may be less sweet since the heat helps enhance and bring out the natural flavors and sweetness of the berries!
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- Cover the pot: When you heat the berries, cover the pot for the first few minutes to speed up the heating process.
- Slice the berries: The jam comes together much easier if you slice the strawberries in half!
- Mashing the strawberries: I like to use a potato masher because the hard or large chunks of the berries get caught in the grid of the masher. You can then just remove this excess fruit pulp and your jam if perfectly smooth without a blender!
- Thickening: This strawberry chia seed jam comes together in 10 minutes, but thickens significantly more as it cools and the chia seeds have had a chance to absorb excess liquid.
How To Customize Your Strawberry Jam
- Add Lemon Juice: If you want to add a little tang, brighten, and balance out the sweetness of the strawberries, you can add 1-2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice to your jam when you stir in the chia seeds. You can even add a teaspoon of fresh lemon zest!
- Add Vanilla Extract: If you want a lovely subtle vanilla flavor added to your jam, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the mixture as it cooks!
- Use A Combo Of Berries: Pair your strawberries with some other fruits like raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, kiwis, cherries, peaches, pineapples, or nectarines!
- Add Spices: Add a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and maybe some chili for a spicy jam!
How Long Does Chia Jam Last?
Chia jams are not shelf-stable and must be stored in the fridge. There is not enough sugar in this jam to make it safe for room-temperature storage, Store leftover jam in a sealed, airtight container, like a glass jar, in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Can You Freeze Strawberry Chia Jam?
You can freeze this healthy jam by allowing it to cool completely and storing it in an airtight freezer-safe container or glass jar, with room to expand, for 6-8 months. Thaw it in the fridge when you're ready to use it.
Is It Safe To Can Chia Jam?
You should NOT can your strawberry chia jam. Chia seeds have not been proven safe for canning and can lower the pH of the fruit. Along with the lack of sugar, additives, and quick heating (if any), chia seed jams are meant to be short-term spreads. This recipe is quick and easy for a reason and ideal for weekly/bi-weekly meal prep or freezer storage.
