Loving Lately: All Things Delicious

June 17, 2014 by Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine 37 Comments

Why not an update on some of the amazing things I am loving lately. Specifically food (plus one or two other things!) You all know how I hate my grocery store, but sometimes they pull through and I find a new fun product to try. I am always on the look out for gluten-free allergy-friendly products and companies. I have a huge folder of such things book-marked on my computer, but most of these things I have never actually seen in stores. When I do, I jump for joy! Introducing what I like to call, the “Healthy SunChip!” Formally called Simply 7’s Quinoa Chips. And more specifically, the Slow Smoked Barbeque ones!Simply 7Simply 7 Quinoa Chips8g of protein per serving, gluten-free, non-gmo, vegan, and damn delicious! I love BBQ flavored things so when you pair that with quinoa, well, you have a winner. They are so light and airy too. You can definitely taste that it is made of quinoa! But really, these reminded me of the SunChips I used to eat before I was gluten-free. But these are 1000x better and healthier. I can’t wait to try the other vegan flavor which is just sea salt. They have two more flavors, cheddar, and sour cream and onion, but they aren’t vegan.

Hope Hummus Lentil DipCan we just take a moment and give a round of applause to my grocery for this one! Now, I was stunned when I found out they carried Hope Hummus, but when I saw these gems the other week, I about died right there on the spot. Basically this is lentil hummus. The little brother of chickpea hummus. It has a much deeper flavor “lentil-ly” if you will. It is so satisfying though and I am in love with using it in place of hummus right now on my sandwiches and veggies.

Roasted Sunflower SeedsI used to eat raw unsalted sunflower seeds everyday. This was before I was brave and added in every nut and seed out there to my diet. But I still love sunflower seeds and just haven’t had them in a while. I forgot about them I guess. So I went to the bulk bins the other week and bought some. Later when I put there on a salad, I realized something was up. These were no raw. They were unsalted, but not raw. They were roasted! But my o my. I missed out big time eating them only raw. These babies roasted and so fabulous! I am no longer forget about these and have been using them again…everyday. I also have a fun recipe up my sleeve to share that utilizes sunflower seeds and sunflower butter ๐Ÿ˜‰

BlueberriesSummer and fruit are basically one of the most heavenly combos. Specifically berries. More specifically blueberries! There is nothing better than fresh sweet summer blueberries. Screw the frozen ones I have to resort to during the remainder of the year. These little blops of blue love are bringing joy to my mornings everyday!

Foodie Finds: You Win Some, You Lose Some

May 15, 2014 by Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine 46 Comments

I have a nice round-up of some new foodie finds to share with you all! Some I have had for a while and have just been holding out on you until I could make this a big round-up. Now some of these products are spot on amazing, while others, well they fell flat. You win some, you lose some, right? And I am usually not a person to waste things. Believe me, just ask anyone who has ever lived with me. The food I cook and buy at the store, I eat. I hate opening something new until every last drop of the old is finished. Same thing with make-up and beauty products. I will use my chapstick and eyeliner until there is absolutely none left. NONE! Don’t even get me started on toothpaste. First of all you need to squeeze from the bottoms and smosh it all to the top as it get empty. Sometimes I will have just brushed my teeth the night before and know there is still a good 2-3 days worth of toothpaste left in the tube, only to come down the next morning and find that someone has thrown it away! Or they will just open something without finishing the old! Seriously? What are you all doing? That is a waste my friends, that is a waste….I will relate all this later on in the post, now moving one!

Kauffman's Fruit Butter 1

Let me start off with a product I’ve had for a while. I had seen these fruit butters get rave reviews by various bloggers and knew I had to get my hands on some. Enter, Kauffman’s Fruit Farm & Market! When I saw that they were a semi-local small company as well, based in PA, I fell in love even more. I absolutely love fruit butter! So much better than jelly and jam. It is creamy and delicious! Of course I normally buy from a really local company out in Ringos, NJ. Their Apple Spice Butter is to die for! But I was up for a change. So Kauffman’s sent me some no-sugar added Pear Butter and Pumpkin Butter. Yea, no sugar-added? You know I was game for that! It is all pure real fruit, some spices, and a bit of lemon juice or apple cider. Everything is perfect! I love using them to top pancakes, hot cereals, and of course nut butter sandwiches!

Kauffman's Fruit Butter 3Another “spread” that I basically die over. MaraNatha’s Creamy Maple Almond Butter! This stuff is pure gold in a jar. Picture the best thing you ever tastes x100000. That is how good this stuff is! Add some cinnamon to it and pair it with an apple. Basically they best thing in the whole world…as of now. You need to get this stuff!

MaraNatha Maple Almond ButterWhen I was on the search for my beloved Brown Rice Tortillas the other week since my damn grocery stopped carrying them, I fell upon these gems. I have been looking everywhere for these Rudi’s tortillas! Specifically the spinach ones! Low and behold, a Stop&Shop far away from my house had them (and my Brown Rice Tortillas!). I grabbed them right away and tried them right when I got home. Can you say, the best gluten-free tortilla ever! I think it surpasses the brown rice one.

Rudi's Spinach Tortillas 1

These things are phenomenal, have the best texture, don’t break and taste like love and spinach. All I did was microwave it for about 30 seconds, slathered on some hummus and loaded it with veggies! Perfect side dish to the dinner I had. They really wrap perfectly.

Rudi's Spinach Tortillas 2Next up, I just have to give another shout-out to Hope Hummus. I have finally tried more than just one flavor. So far I have gotten the Balsamic Roasted Red Pepper, Spicy Avocado, and Thai Coconut Curry. They are all equally amazing and are now my go-to hummus brand! I am seriously loving the Thai Coconut Curry flavor. It is spicy, but subtly sweet from the coconut. Totally a creative hummus flavor! And I will always love the texture these hummus(es?) have. They aren’t totally smooth, but have a bit of chickpea pieces still in there. It is so good! And I just saw that they have a sweet potato hummus!? That has my name all over it! Now I just need to find it!

Hope HummusOkay, maybe I had a lot more wins than loses in this go-round, so here is one more win and then I will get to the big fail. Seasonal Larabars! My grocery has nothing, but they do randomly stock seasonal items totally out of season. I won’t complain though. I was able to get my hand on these Pumpkin Pie bars! This is the only original Larabar I like. I usually opt for the Lemon Pound Cake ALT Bar. But these pumpkin guys are crazy good! Yay, out of season, but still in stock products! (i.e. these were not in stock when they were “in-season”.)

Larabar Pumpkin PieAlright, are you ready for the sad lose? Well through my ambassadorship with Fitapproach as a Sweatpink Ambassador, again I has offered the opportunity to try a new Vega Product. So I loved their bars that I was sent, but this time was another story. I was sent the Vega Sport Protein as part of the #fuelyourbetter campaign. Well I was excited to try a new protein powder, the stats looked pretty good and I always like to compare vegan proteins to my beloved Plant Fusion.

Vega Sport 1The flavor I got was vanilla and it is a complete multi-source, alkaline-forming, plant-based protein powder blend, featuring 5,500mg of BCAAs and 5,000mg of glutamine per serving. Plus, you know, 25g of protein in 1 scoop? Sounds pretty good right?

Vega Sport 2Well I usually use protein powder every night in my almond milk. If I just did a workout, I will use a whole scoop and just mix it in to the milk. I always use my Plant Fusion and since just mixing with a straw doesn’t actually dissolve it all, I am able to “eat” some of the protein off the top. Don’t knock it till you try it! Well I tried to do the same thing with the Vega protein and lets just say it was the worst thing I have ever tasted! O man. Talk about gritty and sandy! The vanilla didn’t even taste like vanilla. It was no fun to eat this stuff! Plant Fusion is so perfect and creamy and delicious. Vega is a no go…at all. I was pretty disappointed about this. Now I have a whole huge box and nothing to do with it. And I just remember I have a Vega Starter Kit of their original protein mixes still in the back of my cabinet. Maybe I should try those? All I know is this stuff is no good. Sorry Vega, I think I will just stick to your snack bars ๐Ÿ˜‰

Vega Sport 3

And one last fail I have to share is my first Bulu Box. I got my May box a few weeks ago and was excited to open it up and see exactly what types of things Bulu Box had to offer. Well I was kind of let down. As a new Ambassador they send me a sweet card. But fail #1, they spelled my name wrong ๐Ÿ˜‰ In the May box I received a Kind Bar (with I’m allergic to), Hummus and Lentil Crackers (which are not vegan), some weird collagen chocolate (no ingredients so I won’t even try, a workout accelerator (I’m not into that stuff), Smarty Pants gummy vitamins,ย  and teeth whitening powder that you mix into coffee and tea…interesting. So this month was kind of a fail since I didn’t use any of the stuff, but I want to hold out for the next two boxes and see if things get better. (You can click my ambassador like and get 50% any subscription if you want to give the box a try yourself!)

May Bulu BoxSo there you have it, some wins, well mostly wins, and two fails. You’ve got to try the products that were wins though! If my crazy enthusiastic rambles didn’t turn you off that is! Speaking of rambles, I think I will link these foodie thoughts to Amanda’s Thinking Out Loud this week!

So tell me:

+ Any new foodie wins or fails lately?

+ Are you a finisher or a waster?

+ Does you grocery store totally suck like mine? How I wish I had a TJs or Whole Foods. I just have this damn Shoprite…which is more like Shopwrong!

Remember to sign up for the Gluten-Free Challenge starting next week! Just leave me a comment on this post or shoot me an email at strengthandsusnhine (at) gmail (dot) com!

A Crazy April & Thursday Finds

April 10, 2014 by Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine 34 Comments

Happy Thursday guys! I am going to do a Thinking Out Loud post this week because I have a lot to say and what better way to get it all out than to do it on a Thursday and link-up with Amanda! Let’s just dive right in, shall we!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. My April is going to be a huge important month and a very crazy busy one as well. I usually never travel…at all, but in the next two weeks I will be doing a hell of a lot of that. Starting with this weekend. Yes this very weekend! On Sunday I will be on a plane early in the morning, flying down to South Carolina to visit Wofford College in Spartenburg. (I can’t wait to wear summer clothes!). I asked Lindsay for some recommendations on places to eat and see, since I have never been there. We are flying back very late Monday night, but if you have any recommendation let me know! But the travel does not stop there. Then after a quick Easter the next weekend, I will be off again, this time with my grandparents too, down to the beautiful Washington D.C.! We are driving down really early on Monday and then my mom and I will be diving back ourselves Wednesday morning. I am going to see George Washington one more time and American before I sign my life away make my final college decision. I am so excited to be in DC again! Hello Sweet Green and Mr. Lincoln! (If you have any more recommendation for DC, don’t hesitate to share ๐Ÿ˜‰ And if you are in DC, let me know, we can meet-up…yoga date?

IMG_37852. I haven’t been on a plane in 5 years? But I do love flying! I am excited, but I am also nervous. I just hope everything goes smoothly and that our carry-ons are okay :/ But you know what’s aggravating? We have to do a lay-over in Charlotte before we can get to SC. Really? So close…why can’t there just be a direct flight!?

IMG_86953. I was so excited to pick up some new finds at the grocery last weekend! #1 we have millet flour from Mr.Bob. I was so stoked to make pancakes with this…which I did, don;t you worry ๐Ÿ˜‰ Then to my surprise my always lacking in foodie finds grocery actually had Hope Hummus! I literally jumped for joy! Hope Hummus is gluten-free, vegan, non-gmo, and organic. I picked up the Balsamic Red Pepper…it is good ๐Ÿ˜‰ (I have to try the spicy avocado one next! What my grocery did not have though was any exotic sweet potatoes….non at all. I had to settle for some boring normal orange ones :/ I also picked up some nut butter packs to hold me over in SC. (You can never go a day with out some nut butter!) And they are both new-to-me ones! I have never had Justin’s and I have only had Wild Friends Cinnamon Raisin!

Food Finds4. Number 2 on the food front is bars! I have been adding in a bar everyday for an extra 200-250 calories. I started with some Lara Alt Bars. They are all good, but just so sweet form the dates. My taste buds just don’t like sweetness like that. But I digress. The Lemon Pound Cake and Pumpkin Pie and the best. I also love that they have an added 10g of pea protein! Then I tried some Lara Uber Bars. I tried the Cherry Cobbler and Nut roll. They are pretty strange. The are salty and only slightly sweet. I wish my grocery had the other flavors to try. Last I received some Squarebars to try! I was so super happy about this. I was actually a little taken aback when I opened them up. They are basically healthy protein candy bars…but not candy. It has no refined sugar, is gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, organic, and non-gmo. A soft nuget covered in chocolate. Again, this was a little much for my taste-buds but they were not bad and I would totally buy them.

Bars5. I have two amazing ladies lined-up for guest posts next week! I didn’t want to leave you guys with no posts so I did some recruiting for Power Monday and a Tuesday post. You are going to love them! I will be back Wednesday probably with a recipe and then I will maybe have a recap Thursday but that might get pushed off until the week after. We shall see!

6. I finally did some online shopping! I decided to treat myself and grab some new clothes I have had bookmarked for so long. A maxi dress and shorter dress from Old Navy and a maxi skirt and shorter dress from H&M. Once everything gets here I will share it all!

7. I had one of my best yoga practices on Monday. Really I could not be more thankful for it. My body and focus were so strong. I was holding poses like forearm stand and scorpion on the first attempt and I finally balanced in Eka Pada Galavasana (Flying Crow Pose)! I had been working on that one for so long! I was beyond proud of myself ๐Ÿ™‚ Yoga = Life. It is so damn beautiful! Tuesday was another great practice. This week yoga has felt just so good with my body. I can’t wait until my Saturday practice ๐Ÿ™‚

8. Through my Girls Gone Sporty Ambassadorship I got hooked up as a new Bulu Box Ambassador! I can’t wait to receive my first box which will be coming in May. “Bulu Box is the first health and nutrition discovery box designed to help you feel your best. Each month, youโ€™ll get a custom box filled with a new mix of 4 to 5 premium samples from top brands to try. Every sample is sufficient enough to decide if the product is right for you. Of course, shipping is always free and you can cancel anytime.” If you want to hook yourself up with a subscription use my promo code and get your 2nd box FREE on a monthly subscription: BULUGAN820.

9. Well 4/5 of my Vitacost shipment came on Wednesday! I am still waiting on my Maranatha Sunflower Seed Butter (I have not had it for a month now! I am dying!). But atleast I got my coconut butter, more slippery elm, my no-salt brown rice cereal, and….Julian’s Paleo Wraps! I can not wait to try these babies. A wrap made of coconut? My goodness, what will they think of next?!

33eae422c00811e38b0d0002c9c7b11e_810. One more thing. Why is it that after a few days of rain and clouds, people forget how to drive when the sun is coming out in the morning? Really?! It takes about 5 minutes to get to my school on the highway with no traffic, but when there is it can take 20. Why don’t we all put our visors down, slap on some sunglasses and start moving!. Going 2mph on the highway is not okay.

Now I will leave you with some flowers ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a happy day lovelys!

IMG_8697

So tell me:

Where is the last place you traveled to? Did you fly or drive? We have driven to SC before many years ago for a dance national. But because of traffic that we hit once we go to SC, the drive ended up being 16 hours. Not fun. The DC drive isn’t bad. Around 3-4 hours, plus I can drive this time!

Any new foodie finds?

What is your favorite protein/food bar? Please don’t be they typical blogger and say Quest bars, hahaha!

Have you ever tried those Paleo Wraps!?

Instagram post 2169912447125673010_462853852 Thanksgiving debate number 2! Side Dish or Dessert? ๐Ÿค” Where does the CLASSIC marshmallow-topped sweet potato casserole reside? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ * It's always been a "sweet" side dish in our family, definitely NOT a dessert! Boy have I MISSED this controversial dish due to the "all vegan marshmallows contain soy, and all soy-free marshmallows aren't vegan". I know some people top it with nuts and brown sugar, but that gets a thumbs down from me. Instagram post 2164819317391112965_462853852 It's STUFFING Season! ๐Ÿ™Œ Or...do you call it Dressing? ๐Ÿค” DEBATE! What do you call this classic Thanksgiving side? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Technically, this is "dressing" since it was baked on its own (not inside a bird). ๐Ÿ˜ My family has ALWAYS called it stuffing and I grew up in the Northeast. In the South, they tend to call it "dressing". They also tend to make it with...CORNBREAD! ๐Ÿคฉ * I ALWAYS make my famous "traditional" stuffing recipe (on the blog), but a cornbread stuffing sounded delicious to try this year!
