I was lying awake at night embarrassed by the fact that this potato queen did not have a mashed potato recipe on Strength and Sunshine yet! :O Over 3 years and I'm just posting some mashed potatoes? A tragedy! Given the fact that we are only 3 days out from Thanksgiving gives me the perfect opportunity to bring you one last twist on a classic essential for this year's feast! Since we don't see much purple on the Thanksgiving table, lots of white, orange, brown, and yellow, a little pop can really help with the celebration.

Let me tell you about my long childhood love for the mash! When I was little, my favorite holiday was Thanksgiving. I LOVED it! I was a little girl who loved food and loved to eat (okay, I still do!) I can remember laying in bed on Thanksgiving-eve, feeling so giddy about watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade the next morning while everyone got ready in the house before we would drive an hour to my grandparents house.

At this time, I still wasn't too fond of stuffing or cranberry sauce, so I would pass over those serving bowls on my grandparent's table. The thing I did go for, and I mean DIVE for, was my grandpa's famous mashed potatoes! Everyone knew that was my favorite dish, so I would pile on as much as I could fit on my little girl plate. This was a once a year treat, he would only make it on Thanksgiving. There were no other mashed potatoes that compared to the ones my grandpa made. From the comforting smell, the super smooth texture, and the LOADS of butter and cream mixed in there, it really was like jumping into a big white pillow on your plate.

I loved topping my plate(s) ( <---there were multiple "seconds") of mashed potatoes with the buttery corn on the table and if there was any ketchup in sight, I would add some of that too 😉 Actually, I would mix everything with the mashed potatoes: the green beans, the turkey, etc. My grandpa's mashed potatoes were simply magic in every way potatoes would be. I do miss those potatoes!

So, in the spirit of mashed potatoes, Thanksgiving, and a new way of eating, Tahini Mashed Purple Sweet Potatoes may just make up for the lost white heaven that used to grace my plate! These mashed purple sweet potatoes are obviously gluten-free, vegan (dairy-free, no butter or cream!), paleo, and top 8 allergy-free. Using my favorite variety of potato and one of my favorite "butters", these mashed purple sweet potatoes semi-fill the hole that my old favorite used to occupy!

  • Author: Rebecca Pytell
  • Cook Time: 35 mins
  • Total Time: 35 mins
  • Yield: 4 1x
  • Category: Side
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Stokes Purple Sweet Potatoes
  • 1 Cup Culinary Coconut Milk
  • ¼ Cup Tahini
  • 1 Tsp Pure Sesame Oil
  • ½ Tsp Ground Ginger
  • ½ Tsp Ground Cloves
  • ½ Tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 TB Toasted Sesame Seeds (plus more for topping)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. Roughly chop the purple sweet potatoes (with skin on) and add them to the boiling water for about 30 minutes or until they are soft enough to mash with a fork.
  3. Drain the water and then add the coconut milk, tahini, sesame oil, spices, and sesame seeds to the pot with the drained potatoes.
  4. Mash the potatoes with a fork or potato masher until you achieve desired consistency.*
  5. Top the mashed potatoes with more sesame seeds and a drizzle of sesame oil if desired.

Notes

*Alternatively to mashing by hand, you can add it all to a food processor, mixer, or blender for super smooth potatoes.

As I noted in the recipe, you can "mash" these a few different ways (you can even remove the skin, but I suggest you not). I actually prefer my potatoes with a bit more texture than as silky smooth as I did growing up. Keeping with my favorite rustic theme (and the fact that I made these on the stove in my college apartment), I went with a good old fork! It did the job just fine and the sweet perfection that is a purple sweet potato, with the flavors of sesame, just may have made this my new favorite "exotic" type of mashed potatoes! I hope you bring some purple to your Thanksgiving table this year! If you did, I want to see it!

So tell me:

+ What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish?

+ Super smooth mashed potatoes or more chunky? And please...leave that precious skin on!

Sweet potatoes are pretty awesome by themselves but I'm always looking for ways to make them a little more interesting. I love the idea of putting tahini with sweet potatoes, I can't wait to try it!

What STUNNING color in a dish! I love purple sweet spuds - my family not so much, but they do love all the other sweet spuds. Great idea using tahini too.

Not only are these the prettiest mashed potatoes I've seen, but they have TAHINI!!! I want to dive in face first 🙂 It's funny because the way you described your grandpa's potatoes, sounds a lot like my grandma's! They were the best and SO not good for you. Haha!! I actually prefer my mashed potatoes on the chunkier side....definitely my favorite dish at Thanksgiving. <3

I love purple sweet potatoes! I make a point of always using them at Thanksgiving when I can get my hands on some, and people are always confused. 😉 Love presenting new types of foods. And I'm going to try tahini and these seasonings in them this year to shake things up! So glad to find this!
