The Origami Cup

Published: Aug 19, 2014 · Modified: Jul 23, 2017 by Rebecca Pytell · This post may contain affiliate links.

Believe me when I say origami is not my forte. However, there is one origami creation I have down pat. While I was searching in my huge closet-of-no-return the other day, I came across my stack of rainbow origami cups. I made these cups back in 4th grade and have kept them ever since. We made them during an activity day where a few parents came in and taught us different crafts and games. I remember my friend's mom was the one doing origami so we stayed over there the whole time.

Origami Cups | Strength and Sunshine

My friend's mom taught us the most essential origami you could know. One so important in her eyes that she had to teach us 4th graders and tell us this would save our lives when we least expected it. The origami cup she said had saved her numerous times. She told us a story about being in a public restroom and needed to swallow a pill. So she took a doubled up paper towel, folded it into a square, and then proceeded to create the origami cup. Thus she was able to fill it with water and swallow her pill. Life saving moment!

After she taught us how to fold one up, we kept practicing and practicing (on every colored sheet of the rainbow). We were obsessed and it was so easy! We made extra to fill up with water from our water bottles and drank from our cups which made the water taste that much better. Supposedly now equipped with this skill, we would never forget. I wanted to test it out the other day when I found my stash and see if this skill was really like riding a bike. You never forget.

Origami Cup Steps | Strength and Sunshine

1. Make sure you have a square. Fold up what ever paper you have on hand, but make sure you start with a square.

2. Fold one corner across to the other to make a triangle.

3. Fold the two longer ends in over-lapping each other.

4. Fold down each single triangle from the top.

5. Lightly squeeze the sides to open up you cup.

(Make sure you really press down your folds and creased, using your nail to get a night thin fold.)

It is like riding a bike! Once you learn, you will never forget! O the origami cup, what a lifesaver you are! Never be without a cup again...for those dire moments when you need to swallow a pill in a public restroom 😉

So tell me:

+ Have you ever done origami? Are you good at it?

+ What's one life-saving tip you learned while you were a child that may not have seemed so important back then, but is now?

I love origami and have been doing it since I was a kid! I love that you made the cups in all the colors of the rainbow. I did that with origami cranes.

I <3 origami. I recently made a whole bunch of super easy origami boats for my son's first birthday party. I had forgotten how simple and beautiful the cups are! Great tutorial post - pinning to remind myself to make these with my son. Here via the SITS Girls Linky today 🙂

Woah this is cool. I really want to try making it! But if someone needs to swallow a pill and their life is at risk they can absolutely cup their hands for water or put their face directly under the facet. Much quicker and easier if time is of the essence.

Well isn't THIS nifty! Seriously, super cool 🙂 I am no origami wizard, I can't even make a paper airplane...as for "lifesaving tips" it's more like advice from my dad, who is disabled and walks with a cane, he told me, when I was younger, "Always walk into a room with your head held high" and at the time, I didn't understand the profoundness in his statement, but now I do. Confidence is everything, no matter what you look like/who else is in the room, if you have confidence in yourself, everything else will fall into place !

Yes! One of my biggest pet peeves is people who walk with their head down, eyes to the ground, and no confidence! You need to show people that you believe in yourself through and through that way they will respect you!
