Fresh or Frozen Potatoes
If you're in a pinch or you want a super quick side dish solution, using pre-peeled, cubed, and frozen sweet potatoes on A-OK! Of course, using fresh sweet potatoes will give you way more flavor!
Peeled or Unpeeled
When it comes to mashed sweet potatoes, I prefer the potatoes to be peeled. If you want a rustic mash, you can leave the skin on, however, I find this to be a better route if making traditional mashed potatoes.
How to Cook Your Sweet Potatoes
- If you're using frozen, you can simply steam them in the steam bag they came in or boil them (depending on the type).
- To boil your sweet potatoes, peel the potatoes, chop them into even-sized pieces, and boil them covered in a pot of water of medium heat for about 20 minutes until they are fork-tender. Drain them completely before adding them back to the pot to mash.
- To roast the sweet potatoes, you can leave them whole, wrapped in foil, and roast at 425Β°F for 35-45 minutes until they are soft. Then you'll be able to cut them open and scrape out the cooked flesh (making the mashing even easier!)
How to Mash the Sweet Potatoes
- Hand-Held Potato Masher or Fork: This is what I like to use. It gives you a nice rustic texture and isn't 100% smooth.
- Hand-Held Electric or Stand Mixer: This will give you a smooth, ultra-creamy texture.
If you roasted the potatoes, scoop out the flesh and add it to a bowl. If you boiled the potatoes, drain and add them back into the same pot (one-pot mashed sweet potatoes are a thing!) Then while the potatoes are still hot, use your preferred mashing device to mash or blend the potatoes to get things combined a bit before adding the milk, butter, and seasonings you choose. Then continue mashing until you get your desired consistency.
Storage and Freezing Instructions
- Storage: You can store any leftover mashed sweet potatoes in an airtight container for 5-6 days.
- Reheating: If you're just reheating a small serving, you can warm it up in the microwave. If you made the mash ahead of time, you can reheat larger amounts in a pot or skillet on the stove over medium heat until warmed through!
- Freezing: You can freeze the finished mashed potatoes, flat, in a Ziplock freezer bag for up to 6 months. Let it thaw in the fridge before reheating!

I'm actually allergic to white potatoes (one of my many totally bizarre food allergies that makes life difficult) and I am so grateful I can enjoy sweet potatoes. I usually prefer them to be savory, so I'm glad you have that option. I've never mashed them - but I might need to try sometime soon!
