What Is A Mimosa?

A mimosa is classically made with orange juice and champagne or sparkling wine in equal parts. Traditionally served in a champagne flute with a strip of orange peel. Chilled and sparkling, stirred, not shaken, and typically served during brunch, at baby showers, weddings, and classy events. You can also find this cocktail made with other citrus juice, like grapefruit, but orange is the classic choice.

Ingredients To Make A Virgin Mimosa

ingredients for virgin mimosas

  • 100% Orange Juice: 100% pure orange juice without pulp is the citrus juice of choice for these mimosas!
  • Sparkling Juice or Lemonade: A simple sparkling white grape juice or sparkling lemonade is the perfect mock-champagne to use!
  • Fresh Orange Slices: A few fresh slices or peel twists can be used to garnish your glasses!

The Best Orange Juice To Use

The best orange juice to use will be a 100% pure orange juice without pulp or added sugar. If you want to really go for freshness, squeeze your own juicy oranges! Tropicana or Simply Orange are both great and easy-to-find storebought options!

Other Citrus Juice Options

If you want a different citrus juice or maybe half orange and half another, other great citrus juice options include 100% grapefruit juice, pineapple juice, guava juice, or plain lemonade.

The Best Non-Alcoholic Substitute For Champagne In Mimosas

The best option is sparkling grape juice. Champagne and wine are made from grapes, so you'll get as similar of a flavor as possible using grape juice, without the alcohol. Make sure what you choose is a sparkling variety, as that's what makes a mimosa so fun and refreshing! Another great option, besides sparkling white grape juice, is sparkling lemonade. (You can use my sugar-free lemonade recipe, swapping the water with plain seltzer to make your own!) If you want to cut out extra sugar and calories, you can use a flavored seltzer! Choose a citrus (lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit) or grape variety for the best taste outcome!

How To Make Non-Alcoholic Mimosas

  1. In a large pitcher, combine equal parts orange juice and sparkling juice; stir to combine.
  2. Pour into chilled glasses.
  3. Add fresh orange or citrus peel to the rim of each glass to garnish.

What's The Best Ratio For Mimosas?

The golden ratio of juice to sparkling liquid is 50/50. However, you can adjust this ratio to your preference. Some like a 3 parts juice, 1 part bubbly combo, with each serving being ¾ cup orange juice and ¼ cup sparkling juice. A classic glass or mimosa is 2 ½ oz (1 part) Champagne, 2 ½ oz (1 part) Orange juice. Since you're not using champagne or wine, you don't have to worry about too much alcohol. It's better to taste test with your chosen sparkling juice so the flavors blend well with the orange juice!

What Size & Type Of Glass Do You Serve A Mimosa In?

Traditionally, a mimosa is served in a champagne flute with an 8-ounce capacity, with a serving being 5-ounces. Since this recipe is non-alcoholic, don't worry about size so much! You can use any type of glass to serve your virgin mimosas in. Each serving for a virgin mimosa is 1 cup or 8-ounces.

What's a Good Garnish For Mimosas?

Standard garnishes include strawberries, cherries, citrus, or a splash of grenadine. Grenadine is a beautiful addition for some added color and rich pomegranate flavor (strong Shirley Temple vibes too!) You can serve these as fruity and fun as you want! It's a great idea to set up a little mimosa bar station with different juice and fruit options so everyone can customize their favorite brunch beverage!

Perfect Brunch Recipes To Pair With Mimosas

The best recipes to complete this mimosa brunch experience are ones that pair well with citrus. Think sweet and salty; a nice blend of savory fare and sweet breakfast dishes!

  • Vegan Chickpea Flour Omelette
  • Vegan Breakfast Casserole
  • Easy Chocolate Chip Waffles
  • Air Fryer Gluten-Free + Vegan Chicken & Waffles
  • Gluten-Free Vegan Buttermilk Pancakes
  • Classic French Toast
  • Breakfast Potatoes with Peppers & Onions

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Cups 100% Pure Orange Juice (no pulp)
  • 2 Cups Sparkling White Grape Juice or Sparkling Lemonade
  • Fresh Orange Slices (optional, garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a pitcher, gently mix together the orange juice and sparkling juice to combine.
  2. Pour the mimosa evenly into 4 chilled glasses.
  3. Add garnishes to the rim of each glass and serve chilled.

Notes

  • The typical mimosa ratio is 1:1, ½ cup of orange juice with ½ cup sparkling juice per mocktail. However, you can adjust this to your preference. Some like ¾ cup orange juice and ¼ cup sparkling.
  • Store any leftover mimosa, covered, in the fridge for a day or two. This beverage does contain carbonation so you don't want it to go flat. It's best enjoyed freshly poured!

Non-alcoholic should always be the default option, IMO!

One of my favorite drinks! The ingredients list here is so fresh. I do prefer my champagne to overpower my orange juice a little bit though.

I have liver disease so I can't have any alcohol. Mimosas were one of the few drinks I liked. I'll have to try these and see if they're as good as the originals.

Give these a shot! The sparkling white grape or lemonade is key!
