Orange Chocolate Chia Buckwheat Cereal

Published: Apr 20, 2015 by Rebecca Pytell · This post may contain affiliate links.

The wonderful citrus combo of orange and chocolate comes together with buckwheat to make a delicious healthy breakfast. Gluten-free, vegan, and full of healthy protein goodness, this orange chocolate chia buckwheat cereal is sure to give you a good morning!

I was going to post some pancakes today, but I decided to post some buckwheat cereal! I have forgotten about this little breakfast grain and haven't had it in months! O, my love for Bob's Red Mill creamy buckwheat cereal is about to be reignited again (like today, I'm probably eating it right now!). This combo was made on a whim, when I realized I had never used my bottle of orange stevia I had in the cabinet. What better way to use the sweet flavor, than in something for breakfast!

Orange Chocolate Chia Buckwheat Cereal | Strength and Sunshine @RebeccaGF666 #breakfast #buckwheat #chocolate #orange #glutenfree #vegan

And really, let's be honest, I rarely make a breakfast that doesn't involve chocolate. The word on the street was orange goes rather well with chocolate too, so this seemed like a fitting idea. I also wanted to make this super "creamy" so to speak, and with the addition of the mighty chia seed, I got the exact consistency I wanted. This creamy buckwheat cereal is already just that...creamy. But the chia seeds make it extra "thick" and lovely!

Orange Chocolate Chia Buckwheat Cereal | Strength and Sunshine @RebeccaGF666 #breakfast #buckwheat #chocolate #orange #glutenfree #vegan

I like my oatmeals, buckwheat cereals, quinoa flakes, all the hot cereals, very thick. But when I make overnight oats, I always add tons of liquid! I like those extra soupy. I love the flavor the cocoa powder gives the liquid and like to "drink" it out of the jar once I eat all the oats! Haha! I guess because it's a "cold" cereal and not one of the hot creamy ones. Regardless, I love them all just prefer certain textures and consistencies in each! I have them all down to a science now. From the amounts of liquid, to the time in the microwave. (I had multiple spill overs last week with my oats though....I may be losing my touch....actually, I just wasn't watching like a hawk).

Orange Chocolate Chia Buckwheat Cereal

Ingredients: (serves 1)

+ ¼ Cup Bob's Red Mill Creamy Buckwheat Cereal(dry)

+ 1 TB Chia Seeds

+ 2 TB Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

+ 6 Drops Orange Stevia

+ 2 TB Fresh Orange Juice (roll your citrus before squeezing for juice, it's much easier!)

+ Zest from Half an Orange

+ ¾ Cup + 2 TB Water

Directions:

+ In a large microwave safe bowl, combine the buckwheat cereal, chia seeds, and cocoa powder and give it all a stir. Next, add the rest of the ingredients (saving some orange zest for topping and the 2 tablespoons of water).

+ Cover the bowl with a napkin and microwave on high for 90 seconds. Stir, re-cover, and microwave on high for another 90 seconds.

+ Carefully remove the very hot bowl, stir in the 2 tablespoons of water, top with more orange zest and maybe even on orange wedge for fun 😉

I kinda want to eat the screen right now as I'm typing this up Sunday afternoon 😉 I think I need some chocolate! Anyway, I hope this BRIGHT orange and chocolate creamy goodness BRIGHTENS your Monday! And for those awesome beasts out there running Boston today, I am wishing you the best of luck and sending so much love! Each and every one of you will be rocking it, I'm sure! Show everyone every where just how strong, resilient, and beautiful we runners are!

So tell me:

+ Are you a thick and creamy or soupy hot cereal person? My mom and brother like watery oatmeal...so gross! I've always had to have mine thick!

+ What's your favorite stevia flavor? I've got to say NOW Foods coconut steviais heaven on earth! I went through that bottle a little to quickly and need more!

This sounds delicious--love the chocolate/orange combo!--but unfortunately can't eat buckwheat (I follow the Blood Type Diet and it's a no-no for Type Bs). Can another grain be substituted? I'm thinking oats or quinoa.

I have always heard that the orange/chocolate combo is delicious, but I haven't tried it yet. I need to change that!

Love the orange/chocolate combo too! I have banana and orange sliced with dark chocolate before bed really often. My husband likes his oatmeal so thick it's ridiculous! It looks like dough the way he eats it 🙂

Literally, what are we doing if we’re not combining the two coziest quick breads into one? Naturally moist and sweet from real pumpkin and ripe bananas, which makes it perfect for a gluten-free recipe that needs extra moisture and an eggless recipe since pumpkin and banana are OG vegan egg replacements! This gluten-free pumpkin banana bread is a blank slate for any cozy add-ins you can dream of, but its simplicity is what makes it shine on its own! 😋🙌

Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞 So Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞

So many people still confuse the two, but it’s an autoimmune disease, not an allergy. That means gluten doesn’t cause an immediate allergic reaction resulting in hives or swelling…it causes your immune system to attack your small intestine longterm.

This distinction matters because:
👉 There’s no medication or quick fix
👉 The only treatment is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet
👉 Mislabeling it as an “allergy” is scientifically incorrect. There is no such thing as a gluten allergy.

Swipe through to learn why the distinction is inportant and why accurate education and awareness is paramount. Let’s set the record straight and not mislabel our disease when speaking about it. 💛
