Freedom Feature: Celine Ikeler "Karma Baker"

Published: Jun 14, 2016 · Modified: Jul 23, 2017 by Rebecca Pytell · This post may contain affiliate links.

Connecting the celiac disease and food allergy/intolerance community together by sharing our stories to food freedom. From our beginning struggles to striving after a diagnosis, we can all relate and help each other out by sharing what we’ve learned and our unique personal journeys.

The Freedom Feature | Strength and Sunshine @RebeccaGF666 Sharing our stories to food allergy freedom

Today I get to introduce you to Karma Baker! The vegan & gluten-free bakery located in Southern California (but ships nation-wide!) and is making fantastic sweet treats for all us allergy-foodies! Celine Ikeler is here to tell you about her bakery and company with their stellar philosophy of "enlightened baking"! I first connected with Celine after she reached out to me about trying some of her baked goods and all-purpose baking flour. Let me tell you...AMAZING! Even after being shipped across the country, that massive snickerdoodle cookie, soft brownie...the smell, taste, wonderful! The all-purpose flour is great for baking up some delicious goodies yourself too! Celine is also offering a fun giveaway to y'all at the end of this post!

background: who are you?

We are Karma Baker. A bakery created out of the need for amazing baked goods that are organic, vegan, gluten-free, and certified kosher with KCA certification. But really, they surpass everyone's expectations about how good it can be.

what led you to start Karma Baker?

I am a baker. And have always baked. Since I was 12. For myself, my kids, my friends, and mostly just because I love to make it and eat it! About 10 years ago, my neighbor's daughter was anaphylactically allergic to many things, probably 20 benign foods. But especially to wheat/gluten, eggs, dairy, and soy.  I couldn't bare leaving her out and I became determined to create something good for her; Something that the other kids might even eat too. And  I did! And it was good. Surprisingly so, even to me. And then I found out my constant runny nose was also an allergy to wheat, eggs, dairy, beans, and even garlic! So I upped my baking game (since I was now the main eater) and got really good at it 😉

Freedom Feature: Celine Ikeler "Karma Baker" | Strength and Sunshine @RebeccaGF666 Connecting the celiac disease and food allergy/intolerance community together by sharing our stories to food freedom.

what are the foundations, values, and mission of your company?

Since I began baking for my own allergies, I created an imaginary high-bar of exceptional taste. So my recipes weren't done until it tasted about as kick-ass as possible. We don't compromise on vegan and/or gluten-free. We won't use animal products, ever. It's all or nothing. We appreciate that a dedicated kitchen means a lot to people with allergies and celiac disease. Through this journey we have become committed to a fully plant-based diet. We now see the impact animal agriculture and use of thier products have on the environment. Arek & I both feel we've had our share of animal products. That we've had an impact on the environment. We are trying now with a plant-based lifestyle to change that. We want to everyone to be aware that eating one of our cupcakes saves 210 gallons of water. Pretty amazing!

what makes your bakery unique?

The vibration of the kitchen is high and it’s essential. No one person is in charge of the other. Everyone knows what needs to be done and everyone shares ideas. The goal is to get our products out there and change the way people think about vegan and gluten-free baking and cooking. We are erasing stereotypes and creating corrective experiences for everyone. One cupcake at a time. Each cupcake is important and made to perfection with love and the best intentions.

Freedom Feature: Celine Ikeler "Karma Baker" | Strength and Sunshine @RebeccaGF666 Connecting the celiac disease and food allergy/intolerance community together by sharing our stories to food freedom.

what's your favorite item?

My personal favorite, and that of most everyone, is our signature Karma Cake. A "better-than-the-original" Hostess style cupcake. It's really amazing!

what do you hope to see in the future; for yourself, the bakery, and the gluten-free/food allergy community?

Since our mission is about serving everyone and creating awareness, we hope to keep expanding on that 100-fold. We are committed to becoming the best V&GF bakery in the country. Our products are available at high end health food grocery stores in Southern California. We have a full service kosher bakery in Westlake Village that serves Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We sell our organic gluten free flour blend online and now we ship our baked goods nationwide. We are changing minds about what vegan means, one cupcake at a time!

Now for the giveaway! Celine is offering a full box of goodies to one lucky (US address) reader! The box will include 1 of each brownie (Chocolate Fudge, Peanut Butter, and Walnut) , one of each sandwich cookies (Karma Sandwich, Chocolate Chipwich, and the Snickwich),  as well as 2 signature Karma Cakes!

To enter, just leave a comment below (mandatory entry) on what your favorite item to get at a bakery is! For an additional entry, follow me on Instagram and leave your handle below in a separate comment, or sign-up for my newsletter and leave a 3rd additional comment! 3 ways to enter, US addresses only, and I will notify the winner 1 week from today (June 21st)!

Make sure to follow along with Celine and Karma Baker on their website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Take a look at all their delicious gluten-free, vegan, organic goodies and order some! They are delightful!

So tell me:

+ Favorite bakery item? I feel like cupcakes are pretty essential when making a bakery stop!

Great feature! As someone who has so many sensitivities, dietary restrictions & preferences, I really appreciate someone who started out wanting to make some goodies for someone. I love it when people do that for me =)
I am totally going to check out their website. I can't wait to go visit them next time I head on down to SoCal.

What a wonderful concept and team! I hope that the world evolves to show everyone how to eat better. Since being diagnosed with an AI and omitting gluten I feel so much better, and my body works much better. I think that everyone should limit gluten and it's so hard on a normal diet. Gluten is in everything. But if GF tasted great more people would jump on board!

Well I don't support that thought. There is nothing wrong with gluten if you don't have celiac disease.

I wish I knew about Celine and her company when I lived in LA last year. Finding good tasting vegan treats with allergy issues is a challenge. I'm not a huge sweet fan but do enjoy a good chocolate chip cookie! Now I'm off to look at her shop site!

Gluten free and vegan? Talk about HEAVEN! I'm down for most anything chocolate, but in my gluten days, I devoured double chocolate muffins almost every day. My high school sold them, so of course I was addicted 😉
