Friday Finisher 3/6/15

Published: Mar 6, 2015 · Modified: Jan 3, 2020 by Rebecca Pytell · This post may contain affiliate links.

You know how the instinct of any parent would be to save their child from a fall no matter what. It's inherent and just happens and all costs. Well on Monday, the streets, sidewalks, everything was wet, icy, snowy, and slippery from the terrible weather over the weekend. I was walking to my morning class (very early, no one was in the city streets), after I made my trip to Starbucks to get my venti dark roast. I had the coffee in my left hand, my heavy backpack (with 85lb laptop) on my back, and trying to stay warm in the cold. I crossed the street at the crosswalk and was turning the corner to walk down to the building I needed to go to and BAM! Body meets ground. Now the whole "parent instinct" thing comes in, just wait. So all of a sudden I was just on the ground, in pain. I landed on my "left side butt" and left knee (from what I could tell in the moment) with no hands.

Now, get this. Somehow my coffee was perfectly upright and safe (like a child) in my left hand (no spills!). Do not ask me how I managed that, but I'm guessing I am so subconsciously in love with coffee, I really don't know. My body got pretty beat up though. My "side butt" is super sore, the side of my left knee is bruised, and then I noticed my left ankle was bleeding and had "sidewalk rash". Not fun. Somehow I did manage to pick my self up and limp to class. The other funny thing is, I was thinking so hard about not falling that morning, yet I did. So now when I'm going to class, I'm dead scared to even take a step. Really...I need the warm weather. The ground is much safer then.... 😉

Eeeek I hope you're okay! I once slid down an entire flight of stairs- on my bum. Needless to say, I was pretty bruised and sore afterwards. I am so impressed that your coffee stayed upright! That is definitely mama instinct right there 😉 As for all the reads- the food industry's role in research always creeps me out. Always. I wish more people knew about it! And I have all your blogging related posts open. So many tabs hehe but so excited to read them all! (My boyfriend always laughs at the number of tabs I have open on my laptop. OOPS.) Happy Friday!!

I'm glad your coffee was safe but sorry you fell! That sucks. There's an instinct when driving, when you have to slam on the brakes to put your arm out to "save" whatever is in the passenger seat. I do it to keep my purse from hitting the floor, but found myself doing it when my husband is in the passenger seat. He thinks I'm nuts!

Great posts, as usual! 🙂 I particularly liked the one about how the food industry helps to shape research. This type of practice has led me to not trust most of the studies that are released in regards to food. When the dairy industry, meat industry, Coca-Cola, and other companies are funding research, there is clearly a conflict of interest. Sadly, most things seem to always come down to the almighty dollar.

OMG a vegan snickers? Snickers is my favorite candy bar! I hear you on the ice and weather in general. My driveway is terrible and so slippery even with salt. I know what you mean about the coffee, I would have done the same, also for my phone! It's funny the things we think about when something like that happens. I have also done some crazy one handed kid-catches in my time as a mom 🙂 Glad you're just sore and scraped and nothing worse!

Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞 So Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞

So many people still confuse the two, but it’s an autoimmune disease, not an allergy. That means gluten doesn’t cause an immediate allergic reaction resulting in hives or swelling…it causes your immune system to attack your small intestine longterm.

This distinction matters because:
👉 There’s no medication or quick fix
👉 The only treatment is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet
👉 Mislabeling it as an “allergy” is scientifically incorrect. There is no such thing as a gluten allergy.

Swipe through to learn why the distinction is inportant and why accurate education and awareness is paramount. Let’s set the record straight and not mislabel our disease when speaking about it. 💛
