I had such a great first time in Washington DC! I have dreamt about going there for so long now and it finally happened. I can tell you I was not disappointed and it was everything I hoped it would be. Now I am not a city girl so I was nervous about how I would feel being in a city (I hate NYC...so scary, dirty, and just gross). But DC was nothing like that. For one it is smaller, beautiful, so much cleaner, and I did not feel unsafe! (Except a little when I took the Metro to Capitol Hill...haha, but that's the subway for you!)
So day one we arrived Thursday morning and had the whole day to adventure the city. We stayed at the Marriot in Foggy Bottom, which had wonderful service, beautiful facilities and rooms, and was just very accommodating and friendly! We started out by going down to the White House (which made me tear up it was so surreal)!
We went around to the (under construction) Washington Monument,
then to the WWII Memorial and the Reflecting Pool,
saying hello to Lincoln,
the Korean War Memorial and Vietnam Memorial....simply stunning and breathtaking,
At this point it started to rain a bit so we began heading back to the hotel, thankfully the shower was pretty quick...noting like what would happen the next day.
Once back at the hotel we got ready to take the Circulator down to Georgetown for dinner and more walking. We went to the original Sweetgreen! My "first-time-eating-out-in-3-years-anxiety" was not bad. I knew Sweetgreen was the perfect GF, organic, allergy-friendly foodie heaven. I got an organic mesculn salad with chickpeas, sweet potato, beets, cucumber, roasted chicken and lemon juice. It was phenomenal!
After our salads my mom wanted to stop at Georgetown Cupcake. She got a Gluten-Free Chocolate Birthday Cupcake.
Then we wondered around the rest of the main street for awhile and then walked back to the hotel to call it a night!
I have to say it was a very successful first day. We had some trouble navigating but I think we did pretty good. The next day I knew would be more hectic since we had our GWU tour scheduled and after we would head up to the Capitol Building. This is getting long so I will save Day 2 and 3 for later in the week!
Hope you have a great Monday!
