This easy Vegan Brown Butter Garlic Gnocchi recipe is gluten-free and allergy-free. Made in 10 minutes with fluffy gluten-free gnocchi tossed in a quick dairy-free brown butter sauce with crispy sautéed garlic. This 5 ingredient garlic butter gnocchi is perfect for a date night dinner or a comforting weeknight meal for the family!

Crispy tender gnocchi and a nutty brown butter garlic sauce sprinkled with dried thyme and nutritional yeast for some herby cheesy flavor. That's it, that's dinner! Gluten-free and vegan so everyone can indulge in this cozy comforting meal! But the fact that it only takes 10 minutes to make, from start to finish, will leave you feeling like you're at a 5-star restaurant. It's a great recipe for a date night at home or to serve yourself on a relaxing self-care night!

Ingredients For Brown Butter Garlic Gnocchi

  • Gluten-Free Gnocchi: You can use your favorite brand of gluten-free gnocchi. I love DeLallo's gluten-free mini gnocchi, they have multiple kinds and they even have a grain-free version if you want to make this recipe grain-free! Of course, if you're feeling ambitious, you can make homemade gnocchi!
  • Vegan Butter: To make the brown butter sauce, you'll be using a few tablespoons of your favorite dairy-free butter.
  • Garlic Cloves: You want whole, fresh garlic cloves for optimal flavor and crispiness. The thinly sliced or minced garlic pieces with get brown and crispy in the butter.
  • Nutritional Yeast: A little cheesiness is always welcome in a hearty recipe like gnocchi. But a few teaspoons of nutritional yeast or vegan parm add to the nuttiness of the brown butter and give a little something extra to the dish!
  • Seasonings: Salt and black pepper to taste, plus some dried thyme and parsley are my suggestions. They add a delicious earthy balance to the buttery garlic flavors.

What Is Brown Butter?

While it may sound intimidating, brown butter is just melted butter, cooked long enough in the pan to toast and caramelize the milk solids. So, when making vegan brown butter, you're toasting the proteins (typically pea protein) added to the butter. Browning butter gives you a nice deep nutty flavor and to enhance that flavor in this vegan brown butter sauce, the nutritional yeast helps out with the nutty profile while remaining dairy-free and nut-free.

How To Make Garlic Butter Gnocchi

  1. Add the vegan butter to a skillet or saute pan over medium-high heat and stir the butter around until melted and bubbly.
  2. Once the butter looks foamy and smells fragrant, add the thinly sliced garlic, stirring for a few minutes until the pieces begin to brown, then add in the seasonings.

  1. Add the pre-cooked gluten-free gnocchi to the brown butter sauce and toss to coat.
  2. Allow the gnocchi to fry and get brown and crispy in the sauce before adding the nutritional yeast and giving everything one last stir.

Tips For Crispy Gnocchi

  • Read the instructions on your package of gnocchi, but you should boil the gnocchi for just about 2 minutes and drain the water. By pre-boiling the gnocchi and not adding it dry to the sauce, you'll still have that soft and pillowy texture on the inside.
  • Add the gnocchi to the pan and stir it to fully coat the pieces in the brown butter. Then allow the gnocchi to sit, untouched, in the pan to get golden brown and crispy on one side before you stir it again.

Recipe Variations

  • Herbs: You can add other dried herbs like sage, rosemary, oregano, or chives!
  • More Cheese: If you want this vegan gnocchi to be extra cheesy, you can serve it with homemade vegan parmesan or add some vegan mozzarella cheese shreds.
  • Add some cooked veggies like Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, broccoli, cauliflower, or green peas to the dish.
  • Add some crunch and smokiness with some vegan coconut bacon!
  • If you are using a standard 16-ounce box of gnocchi, add an extra tablespoon of vegan butter and 1 more garlic clove when making the recipe. Adjust seasoning amounts to taste.

How To Store Leftovers

Store leftover gnocchi after it has cooled, in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

To reheat the gnocchi, heat a tablespoon of butter or olive oil in a pan on the stove and add the cold leftover gnocchi to the melted butter or oil. Stir the gnocchi in the pan until coated and heated through, about 3-4 minutes. If reheating a small portion, use less butter or oil, about 1 to 2 teaspoons as needed.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz Gluten-Free Gnocchi
  • 3 TB Vegan Butter
  • 3 Cloves Garlic (thinly sliced, or crushed and minced)
  • ½ Tsp Dried Thyme
  • ½ Tsp Dried Parsley
  • Salt + Pepper (to taste)
  • 2-3 Tsp Nutritional Yeast (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil the gnocchi according to package directions (2 minutes), drain, and set aside.
  2. In a skillet, add the vegan butter over medium-high heat until melted and foamy before adding the minced garlic.
  3. Fry the garlic in the butter until golden brown, then add the seasonings and pre-cooked gnocchi to the skillet.
  4. Allow the gnocchi to get crispy and golden brown in the brown butter on one side before stirring everything and allowing the other side of the gnocchi to crisp.
  5. Add the nutritional yeast, give the gnocchi a final stir, and taste-test to adjust any seasonings, before plating and serving hot.

Notes
