It's that wonderful time of year again when not only is it sweet potato "season" (although I'd argue there is never a season for potatoes...Potatoes are 365), but also PURPLE sweet potato season! I do have to lament this time and try to reconcile the fact that there is only a 7% chance I'll have a PSP anytime soon :/ Nary a purple beauty to be found in NJ, I kid you not! The last one I had were my special birthday shipment from Frieda's, my only connection to the lovely Stokes Purple. Too bad Freida's has kind of died away and I never hear from them anymore 🙁 No tatoes for me!)

Who could say no to colorful food?

I knew I had to make those few purple beauties into something spectacular for the blog. This Purple Sweet Potato Tater Tot recipe was one of the creations that came to be! I'd been craving some tots for the longest while. My mom used to buy the frozen bagged tots that you bake in the oven and serve them to my brother and I for dinner. I actually never "liked" tater tots too much. I never told my mom that, not sure why, but I always preferred fries or mashed potatoes. There was something about them that just wasn't "potato" enough for me. Alas, grab some ketchup and I could deal! However, nowadays, even broccoli tots have my heart!

I think my affinity for tater tots grew after the Napoleon Dynamite craze. Am I right? You know what I'm talking about!

Ah! Napoleon and his tots! ND was another one of my strange obsessions when I was younger. I again had memorabilia, shirts, gizmos, and gadgets. I don't think (I, nor anyone else) will ever understand the point of that movie. The strange and random storyline was all part of the appeal I guess, and you couldn't not watch the movie multiple times. A moment of pop culture that will live on for generations (I hope!) It gave us a greater appreciation for tater tots at least. I bet the industry saw a boom in business after that movie was released!

I think Napolean would be even more protective of these snazzy tots! When you make something purple, life just gets that much better! Unlike the movie, purple is something we can all understand! I kid you not, everyone will love tater tots once they have this purple version! They're a tad sweet due to the "sweet potato" factor, but I still decided to spice mine up in a more savory way. It's up to you on the spices you want to include! One thing is certain, though....serve with ketchup!

Are we excited to get our tot-on yet? I say we bake up some Purple Sweet Potato Tater Tots, cozy up on the couch, and mindlessly watch Napoleon Dynamite! Who's with me? Tater tot craving...satisfied and healthified! I do hope the tater tot crave comes back...it seems to have died in the 90s...But they really are a great kid-friendly side dish that now we adults can feel awesome about eating too!

So tell me:

+ Napoleon Dynamite fan? Always!

+ Did you grow up eating tater tots?

These purple tots look so good! I actually never had tater tots growing up, I only came across them as an adult and I really enjoy them, but tend to just buy them once in awhile as I'm not a fan of all of the crappy ingredients in them. I like the idea of making my own. And making PURPLE ones!!

Now I have to see if anyone local has purple sweet potatoes! But if not, try them with the orange ones... never had a sweet potato tater tot!

They sound so much better than the ones I (rarely) ate as a kid...

I totally love sweet potatoes, and I'll take them any way I can have 'em! Usually, baked sweet potato fries do the trick for me, but this time, I gotta say these purple lovelies are calling my name! Love that you included that scene from Napoleon Dynamite. Hard to forget a scene like that! Lol. Happy Monday!

I LOVED tater tots as kid, we always had them on my birthday. I have always wanted to try to make them myself. I might try this recipe with regular sweet potatoes as my grocery store never has the purple ones. I have to make a special whole foods trip for those. Somehow they have purple carrots, cauliflower, and a bunch of other random purple veggies, but no potatoes, bummer...

Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞 So Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞

So many people still confuse the two, but it’s an autoimmune disease, not an allergy. That means gluten doesn’t cause an immediate allergic reaction resulting in hives or swelling…it causes your immune system to attack your small intestine longterm.

This distinction matters because:
👉 There’s no medication or quick fix
👉 The only treatment is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet
👉 Mislabeling it as an “allergy” is scientifically incorrect. There is no such thing as a gluten allergy.

Swipe through to learn why the distinction is inportant and why accurate education and awareness is paramount. Let’s set the record straight and not mislabel our disease when speaking about it. 💛
