Ingredients For Air Fryer Carrots
- Carrots: Whole raw carrots that are similar in width to ensure that cook evenly. You can peel them or leave them unpeeled. You can slice them straight into coins or on a diagonal to add more visual appeal. You can also cut them into sticks or as fries for a fun snack option.
- Olive Oil: Since we're not making crispy thin chips and the carrots need some moisture to keep the insides soft and tender, a few teaspoons of olive oil are needed to have these carrots coming out of the air fryer perfectly "roasted".
- Seasonings: I'm keeping it simple for the recipe but you can use any seasonings your heart desires! My go-to's are salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
Ingredient Variations
- Colored Carrots: If you're lucky enough to stumble upon a bunch of rainbow or different-colored carrots (purple, golden, or yellow), go for it! Use a combination of carrots for a beautiful and stunning side dish with minimal effort!
- Oil or Butter: Instead of olive oil, you can use melted coconut oil or melted vegan butter! You only need 2-3 teaspoons per pound of carrots. If you choose to go oil-free, your carrots may end up slightly dry.
- Sweet: To enhance the natural sweetness of the carrots, season them with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, or allspice! You can also toss them with a few teaspoons of maple syrup or vegan honey!
- Spicy: Make your carrots a little firey with some chili powder, chipotle, hot curry powder, or even a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce.
- Herby: You can't go wrong with some aromatic dried herbs like thyme, sage, rosemary, oregano, basil, dill, or parsley!
How To Air Fry Carrots
- Rinse and trim the top stem and bottom point of your carrots. Lightly peel the carrots or leave them unpeeled. Cut them into ¼-inch thick diagonal slices.
- Toss the carrot slices with the oil and your choice of seasonings.
- Place the carrots in a single layer in your air fryer basket and set your air fryer to 400°F to air fry for 8 minutes.
- Shake the basket before air-frying the carrots again for 6-8 more minutes, just until the edges start to get golden brown.
How Long To Air Fry Carrots
This all depends on the size of your air fryer and how charred you want them. The smaller the air fryer, the more batches you may need to do to prevent overcrowding and steaming, however, I was able to do the entire 1 pound of carrot in my small 3.7-quart air fryer! Cooking them for 8 minutes and then giving them a shake before cooking for another 5-8 minutes was the perfect amount of time to get the carrots fork-tender. The longer you cook them, the more browned and crisp the edges will become them in longer (8-10 minutes).
How To Store Leftovers & Freeze
You can meal prep and store leftover air-fried carrots in a closed container in the fridge for 5-7 days. You can also make a large batch and freeze them, by first allowing them to come to room temperature, before storing them in an airtight ziplock freezer bag for up to 6 months.
How To Reheat Leftovers
Leftover air fryer carrots can be reheated and crisped again by tossing them back in your air fryer at 375°F for 3-4 minutes. If you are air-frying them from frozen, try to break them up so they aren't frozen together before adding them directly to your air fryer and air fry at 375°F for 5-7 minutes, tossing halfway through.
What To Serve With Air Fryer Carrots
When served as a side dish, these customizable carrots go great with a big dinner roast like a whole roast chicken, whole cauliflower, or lentil loaf. These carrots are perfect in lunchboxes or as an addition to a salad or grain bowl since you can enjoy them warm or cold (no loud crunching either)! Of course, by making a large batch these tender carrots are a must for holiday feasts like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter to pair perfectly with that side of stuffing or mashed potatoes.
