An easy pasta recipe for any weeknight dinner! Gluten-Free Farfalle Pasta with a Homemade Tomato Basil Sauce! A quick vegan, allergy-free, and kid-friendly meal with fun bow-tie pasta, dressed in an incredibly aromatic and delicious stove-top sauce that can be used for any noodle dish!

Who doesn't love a humble plate of delicious pasta and red sauce? It's that last-minute go-to on a busy weeknight. Just grab a box of gluten-free pasta, a jar of sauce, and get that pot of water boiling on the stove. A bland solution, but does the job of feeding our own bellies and hungry families. BUT, why not take it up a notch by using a fun-shaped pasta, gluten-free farfalle, and make a fragrant homemade tomato basil sauce that's almost as easy as opening a jar?

Is farfalle pasta gluten-free?

Lucky for us, Jovial makes a fantastic gluten-free farfalle that's also vegan (no eggs!) and allergy-free! It's a 100% organic brown rice pasta that holds up and tastes just like the "real thing". I always loved bow-tie pasta growing up and it's such a fun shape that any celiac kid would love! It's a great shape for holding a delicious homemade sauce in those crevices and folds. I've always loved that tender bite in the middle of the noodle when the fold come in to make that "tie".

What sauce goes well with farfalle pasta?

Farfalle is that special type of noodle that goes well with almost any sauce! The ribbon-like pleats, nooks, and crannies of its folds are perfect for any saucy goodness you want to toss it with! From pestos to up-leveled mac & cheese, but of course, a classic Italian tomato sauce does the trick too! A super fragrant, homemade, tomato basil sauce you can whip up on the stove and have simmering away while you boil your gluten-free noodles is just the direction we'll go for this quick and easy weeknight meal solution!

How to make homemade tomato basil sauce

Mind you, this sauce can be made ahead of time and used for any pasta you have on hand! Since bow-tie pasta is a little bit special, it deserves a special homemade sauce to complement it!

What you need:

  • Diced Tomatoes
  • Plain Tomato Sauce
  • Vegetable Broth
  • French Basil
  • Shallots
  • Tomato Paste
  • Garlic, Pepper, Dried Thyme, & Parsley
  • Olive Oil

A perfect "real food" sauce without the sugars, sodium, and preservatives in the jarred stuff! This tomato basil sauce is so full of flavor, smooth with a few chunks of tomato for texture, and does all the heavy lifting itself by just simmering away on the stove. Jar it up and use it throughout the week or all at one time with your farfalle pasta tonight!

First of all, how fun is bow-tie pasta! It has been one of my favorite noodles since I was a kid. Also, I've been wanting to try a homemade pasta sauce for a while. I know it's healthier when you cook with fresh ingredients, but I guess I feared it would be a whole-day process. Yet this sauce sounds pretty easy to make and is the same flavor (tomato basil) as my favorite organic store-bought sauce. Definitely saving this recipe for a future pasta night!

I've tried farfalle with basil pesto as well as walnuts and cheese but this looks delicious too and I will have to make it with ripe summer tomatoes. It really is a delicious and versatile pasta dish.
