A favorite side dish at any summer bbq or cookout! The Classic American Coleslaw, now made gluten-free, vegan, and top 8 allergy-free! A super easy recipe to whip up ahead of time, served chilled as is, or even use it as a topping in a sandwich!
The time has come to complete the “Summer Side Dish Trifecta”! Last year I gave you my Classic American Potato Salad and my Classic American Macaroni Salad. Now it’s time for THE CLASSIC AMERICAN COLESLAW! Not only is coleslaw a must for summer bbqs, picnics, cookouts, etc….but it’s such a great side dish for any dinner, a topping on a sandwich, even just eating it as a snack sounds good!
Growing up I would always scoop up the potato salad and macaroni/pasta salads first, but honestly, the summer plate could never be complete without at least a little pile of the American slaw! Sweet, tangy, cabbagy? So good! Coleslaw was probably the only way I ate cabbage as a kid (back in the day I hated sauerkraut! Boy, has that changed!). Any time I can have cabbage in anyway, you bet I do!
What’s in your classic American coleslaw? It’s so basic, so easy, almost too easy! Green cabbage, red cabbage, carrot, mayo, a splash of white vinegar, sweeter, and a dash of pepper! That’s it! O, and of course you know our coleslaw here on Strength and Sunshine is gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-free of course! And guess what? This coleslaw tastes EXACTLY like the classic store-bought stuff you grew up with (it even smells the same)!
Now…you have two options when making this classic American coleslaw. You can go rustic, old-school, and chop/shred up your cabbage and carrots yourself. Alternatively, you can take the “cheater” (or in my mind, time-saving-savvy way) or just buying pre-shredded cabbage or slaw mix. I know…but sometimes we just don’t have the time! Summer is about fun in the sun, so you may need to cut corners everywhere you can!
The hardest thing about all these summer side dishes is the “chilling time”. No lukewarm salads and slaws here! They need to be cold…cold and delicious! On another note…please don’t leave food out on the hot summer buffet table for hours on end. Food poisoning is real guys…keep those sides cold and covered! Put them away after everyone has been served! I’m about to be a public health professional so…don’t make me come after you!
Classic American Coleslaw
- In a large bowl, combine the shredded veggies, mayo, vinegar, sweetener, and pepper.
- Mix well to fully coat and combine.
- Chill in the fridge before serving.
What cookout would be complete without the American Coleslaw? None! It would be a sad cabbage-less gathering. This slaw is so easy to make…you can’t not make it! I even gave you a super lazy, no-fuss hack! As long as you have a hand to mix with…you’re golden! Of course, if you want to get crafty and utilize some skills, you may be interested in this fancy slaw for your next potluck too!
