What Is An Apple Fritter?

A real apple fritter is a type of yeasted donut that is filled with chunks of apples, cinnamon, sugar, and deep-fried. It's then covered in a simple sugar glaze. Apple fritters don't look like a typical round doughnut, instead, they are rustic blobs of batter dropped into the oil they're fried in.

Are They Healthy?

Since apple fritters are deep-fried in oil and loaded with added sugar, they're definitely a decadent treat!

For The Bread:

  • Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour: Your favorite gluten-free all-purpose flour will give this quick bread structure and fluffiness.
  • Baking Powder + Baking Soda + Salt: Baking powder, soda, and a pinch of salt will ensure the crumb of your loaf is fluffy, airy, and cakey!
  • Granulated Sweetener: This sweet bread uses extra granulated sugar to sweeten it, like a cake! You can use sugar-free sweetener or normal sugar.
  • Vegan Butter: Vegan butter keeps this bread moist and buttery like a cake!
  • Flax Eggs: Two flax eggs will act as the eggless binder for the loaf to hold it all together.
  • Non-Dairy Milk: Plain unsweetened dairy-free milk of your choice to help mix together the batter.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of vanilla is always required in a cozy baked treat!

For The Apples:

  • Fresh Apples: Sweet, crisp apples are best! Choose a variety that can hold up to the bread dough and baking. Gala, Fuji, Braeburn, Envy, or slightly tart apples like Pink Lady or Honeycrisp!
  • Granulated Sweetener: Just a sprinkle of extra sugar to draw out the natural sugars in the apples
  • Cinnamon: I like to add an extra dash of cinnamon directly to the apple layer!

For The Brown Sugar Layer:

  • Brown Sugar Sweetener: Dark or light brown sugar or sugar-free sweetener will work! I like using dark brown for a deeper molasses flavor.
  • Cinnamon: More cinnamon for this streusel-like layer!

For The Glaze:

  • Powdered Sugar: You can use powdered sugar or a sugar-free variety for this simple sweet glaze to drizzle onto the baked loaf.
  • Water or Non-Dairy Milk: Water or more non-dairy milk is used to make the glaze thick and drippy!

How To Make Apple Fritter Bread

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking powder, soda, and salt.
  2. Melt the vegan butter in the microwave.
  3. Add the flax eggs, sweetener, and vanilla to the melted butter and mix them together until combined.
  4. Add the warm butter mixture to the bowl of dry ingredients.

  1. Now, add the non-dairy milk to the batter so it's not too thick.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon together.
  3. Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces before adding them to another bowl and mixing them together with the sugar and cinnamon to coat.
  4. Line an 8x4-inch loaf pan with parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup.

  1. Pour half the bread batter into the lined loaf pan.
  2. Next, layer in half the apple mixture and half the brown sugar cinnamon.
  3. Cover the apples and sugar with the rest of the bread batter so they're fully covered.
  4. Finish the loaf by adding the last of the apples and brown sugar cinnamon mixture.

  1. Bake the apple fritter bread in the oven at 350°F for about 60 minutes.
  2. Remove the baked loaf from the oven and let it rest in the pan for 10-15 minutes before removing it and transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Glazing The Apple Fritter Bread

Technically, this finishing drizzle of glaze is optional, but it just would not give you the full old-fashioned apple fritter tasting experience without it!

  • Make the simple white glaze by mixing together powdered sugar and water. For a creamier creme glaze, you can use non-dairy milk instead of water. You want just enough liquid to make the sugar liquidy enough to drizzle over the loaf, but still thick enough that it will harden and stay on the loaf.
  • You can cover the entire loaf with the glaze like a real apple fritter by warming the glaze slightly before pouring it over the loaf or just some small horizontal drizzles over the top. It's up to you!

Baking Tips & Tricks

  • Want some maple flavor in your loaf? Swap the vanilla extract for maple extract!
  • If you don't have vegan butter on hand, you can use a neutral flavored oil. To make it oil-free, you can swap in applesauce. Take note that if you use applesauce, your loaf will be gummier.
  • If you use a 9x5 loaf pan, your bread will be flatter and you will need to reduce the baking time by about 10 minutes or so.
  • Lining the loaf pan is essential! I grease the pan and line it with parchment for extra security. If you don't, the sugars will cause the loaf to stick in the pan; it will also make cleanup more difficult for you!
  • Make sure you allow the bread to cool completely before topping it with the glaze.

Storing Leftovers

You can store leftover vegan apple fritter bread at room temperature in a closed container for up to 3 days. You can keep it longer in the fridge for 5-7 days. Bring the loaf to room temperature before serving or give it a quick warm in the microwave.

Freezing Instructions

You can freeze the Amish apple fritter bread by warping the loaf in plastic, then a layer of foil, before storing it in a ziplock freezer bag or airtight container for up to 6 months. You can also wrap and freeze individual slices for easier defrosting. I recommend waiting to add the glaze if you plan on freezing the bread. When you are ready to defrost, allow the loaf to thaw in the fridge overnight before bringing it to room temperature and adding the glaze before serving.

How To Serve

Serve this Amish apple fritter bread with some homemade apple cider or a cozy mug of hot chocolate! You can slather on a pat of vegan butter, some nut or seed butter, or even homemade apple butter! You can eat it warmed in the toaster oven or microwave or keep it at room temperature. Enjoy it with a fork or use your hand and bite right in!

Ingredients

Scale

For The Bread:

  • 2 Cups Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 Tsp Baking Powder
  • ½ Tsp Baking Soda
  • ¼ Tsp Salt
  • ⅔ Cup Granulated Sweetener (or preferred granulated sugar)
  • ½ Cup Melted Vegan Butter (or Neutral Flavor Oil)
  • 2 Flax Eggs (2 TB Milled Flax Seed + 6 TB Water)
  • ¼ Cup Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk
  • 1 Tsp Pure Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Extract (or Maple Extract)

For The Apples:

  • 2 Cups Peeled Chopped Apples (2-3 small apples)
  • 2 TB Granulated Sweetener (or preferred granulated sugar)
  • 1 Tsp Cinnamon

For The Brown Sugar:

  • ⅓ Cup Brown Sugar Sweetener (or preferred light or dark brown sugar)
  • 1 Tsp Cinnamon

For The Glaze:

  • ½ Cup Powdered Sugar Sweetener (or preferred powdered sugar)
  • 1-2 TB Water or Non-Dairy Milk (varies for thickness)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In a small bowl, melt the vegan butter before adding in the granulated sweetener, flax eggs, and vanilla. Mix well to combine and cream the ingredients together.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the bowl of flour and mix them together.
  5. Add the non-dairy milk and mix the batter together until smooth.
  6. Combine the brown sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl and set aside.
  7. Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces, add them to a bowl and toss them with the granulated sweetener and cinnamon.
  8. Line an 8x4 loaf pan with parchment paper and pour half the bread batter evenly into the pan. Add half the apple mixture over the batter and then half the brown sugar mixture over the apples. Repeat the layers again with the rest of the batter, apples, and brown sugar.
  9. Bake the loaf in the preheated oven for about 60 minutes until a toothpick or cake tester inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.
  10. Remove the load from the oven and allow it to rest in the pan for 10-15 minutes while you make the glaze.
  11. In a small bowl, mix together the powdered sugar and water until the mixture is drippy but thick.
  12. Remove the loaf from the pan and parchment paper and allow it to cool on a wire rack before drizzling on the glaze.

Notes

  • Apples: I recommend using Gala, Fuji, Braeburn, Envy, or slightly tart apples like Pink Lady or Honeycrisp!
  • Make-Ahead: To bake the bread ahead of time, let it cool to room temperature before storing it in an airtight container for 3-4 days, un-sliced, at room temperature, or chilled in the fridge for 5-7 days. Include a paper towel sheet in the container to prevent excess moisture from accumulating on the outside of the loaf.
  • Leftovers: To store leftovers, store the unsliced portion of the bread in an airtight container for 3-4 days at room temperature or about 5-7 days in the fridge.
  • Freezing: You can freeze the bread by slicing the loaf, but keeping it together in one form (you can also freeze an entire uncut loaf). Wrap the entire loaf in plastic wrap, then foil, before storing in a freezer-safe storage bag for 6-8 months.
  • To Thaw: Thaw the frozen loaf in the fridge overnight, before unwrapping and bringing it to room temperature. Enjoy leftovers at room temperature or warmed in the oven or microwave!

Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞 So Celiac Disease is NOT a food allergy 🚫🍞

So many people still confuse the two, but it’s an autoimmune disease, not an allergy. That means gluten doesn’t cause an immediate allergic reaction resulting in hives or swelling…it causes your immune system to attack your small intestine longterm. 

This distinction matters because:
👉 There’s no medication or quick fix
👉 The only treatment is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet
👉 Mislabeling it as an “allergy” is scientifically incorrect. There is no such thing as a gluten allergy.
