Ingredients In A Virgin Margarita
- Tonic Water: Tonic water contains quinine which gives it a slightly bitter taste, akin to alcohol. You can totally use plain water or even club soda or sparkling water if you want a greater bubbly zing to your mocktail. Tonic water will make your virgin margarita the most similar in taste to a real margarita.
- Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice is the largest portion of the citrus juice mixture you'll be adding as it's the dominant taste in a margarita.
- Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice, from an actual orange, for color and natural sweetness.
- Lemon Juice: A splash of fresh lemon juice rounds out the citrus trio in this mocktail.
- Agave Nectar: You can use any liquid sweetener here, but agave is used to make tequila so we're trying to keep everything in the family here!
- Ice: Crushed, cubed, whatever ice suits your fancy for these cold beverages!
- Salt: Everyone loves a salted rim! You can use real margarita salt, flakey salt, or table salt if that's all you have!
Ingredient Customizations
- Add Spice: If you like spicy margaritas, you can do this by muddling a few slices of jalapeno in the citrus juice before adding it to the glass.
- Swap The Rim: You don't have to use salt! You can line the rim with Tajian for a salty chili lime flavor or you can use sugar or a combination of salt and sugar which would be a great option if you're serving these drinks to kids!
- Different Liquids: Again, you don't have to use tonic water, you can use plain water, club soda (which contains potassium sulfate and sodium chloride), sparkling water (try a lime or lemon lime flavor), even Topo Chico would be a great option with a slight minerally taste.
- Sweetener: The sweetener is all to taste but you can use something other than agave like honey (hot honey, vegan honey), simple syrup, a few drops of stevia or monk fruit.
- More Fruit: You can go beyond the classic margarita flavor and use different fruits for flavors! Try pineapple, strawberry, blueberry, mango, or peach! You can strain the fresh juice from puree by blending the fruit and pushing it through a sieve or you can muddle the fruits before straining.
- Get Fancy: If you want to go premium, you can splurge on this alcohol-free zero-proof tequila and add a few ounces to your drink.
How To Make A Virgin Margarita
- Slice the citrus in half and squeeze the fresh juice out using a juicer.
- Mix the lime, orange, and lemon juice together with the agave nectar.
- Use a wedge of lime to wet the rim of the drink glass before dipping the glass rim upside down into salt to line the rim. Then add enough ice to fill the glass about halfway.
- Pour the citrus mixture into the glass and top it off with your choice of water. Serve with an extra wedge of lime, if desired.
Make-Ahead & Batching Instructions
This recipe for non-alcoholic margaritas makes 1 drink. To make these margaritas for a crowd, simply multiply the ingredient amounts in the recipe by how many people you expect to serve. Once you know how much to make, you can prep the citrus juice and sweetener mixture ahead of time. When you're ready to serve the actual mocktails, add ⅓ cup of the citrus mixture to each glass and top with the sparkling water of choice you are using.
How To Make Frozen Virgin Margaritas
If you want to serve them frozen, use a blender to blend the citrus mixture with the ice and enough sparkling water to get it moving until you get a slushy texture. Then pour the frozen drink into salted glasses and serve! You can do this with a big batch as well to easily serve a whole pitcher.
