Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Skewers (Vegan, Gluten-Free, Allergy-Free)

What's better than a chocolate-covered strawberry? Chocolate Covered Strawberries on a Stick! Turn the classic chocolate treat into a fun, fruity, handheld dessert, fit for any celebration! This quick & easy skewer recipe is gluten-free, vegan, allergy-free, and paleo with just 2 ingredients. A perfect kid-friendly way to decorate, serve, and eat!

two sprinkle coated chocolate-covered strawberries on a stick

Have you ever turned down a chocolate-covered strawberry? (I'll answer for you...) I don't think so! They're the easiest "fancy" dessert! At least, I've always associated them with a fancy treat. When you cover anything in a thick glossy layer of chocolate, you can turn any mundane ingredient into a devilishly decadent delicacy! You might typically associate chocolate-covered fruit with Valentine's Day, but when it's summer and ALL the berries are just prime and overflowing in your fridge, I think that's the best time to do some chocolate dipping!

The best way to make chocolate-covered strawberries

It can be so tedious dipping each individual strawberry in chocolate and then setting them down on wax paper to dry (in the process, messing up the smooth, all-around exterior of the glossy chocolate!) Putting the strawberries on a stick completely trumps the old process for various reasons...

  • Just pop the strawberries on a stick and roll them in melted chocolate.
  • No messy chocolate hands since you hold the free end of the stick!
  • So much quicker since you'll be coating multiple berries at once.
  • Easier to serve and decorate. Beautiful strawberry bouquet-style, perhaps? (homemade Edible Arrangement!)
  • Most importantly....easier to eat! No messy hands and you can enjoy an actual serving, all on one stick! (No one eats just ONE chocolate-covered strawberry!)

How to make chocolate-covered strawberries

Equipped with a fresh pint of beautiful strawberries, a bag (or two) of allergy-free chocolate, and wooden kabob sticks, you can get this chocolate coated party started! Just pinch the green leaves off the tops of the strawberries, then poke the pointed end of the kabob stick through the center of the strawberries (I put 4 on each stick). With the strawberries on the stick, melt your chocolate in a large wide bowl, before rolling the strawberry skewers in the melted dairy-free chocolate (I used a spoon to help coat), and then standing the sticks up to dry. I stood the sticks up in the strawberry container; you can also use something styrofoam to hold the sticks in!

Best chocolate to use

I actually used a mixture of Enjoy Life rice milk and dark allergy-free chocolate squares. You can melt chips or squares and use whatever ratio you'd like. I melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl at 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until completely melted and drippy!

How to decorate

While the chocolate is still wet, you'll want to add any additional decorations. I chose to use rainbow sprinkles which were easy to just sprinkle on and fully coat the chocolate! You can get as fancy or keep it as simple as you want. Some other ideas:

  • Coat them in allergy-free white chocolate instead
  • Drizzle them in another color chocolate (add natural food coloring to allergy-free white chocolate!)
  • Use shredded coconut
  • Try chopped nuts or seeds (depending on allergy needs!)
  • Use other fun shaped or colored sprinkles

How to store

Once you've dipped and decorated your chocolate-covered strawberries on a stick and the chocolate has mostly hardened, keep the sticks standing up in the container or foam you used and place them in the fridge to really chill and harden for at least 30 minutes before serving. From there, you can keep the chocolate-covered strawberry skewers at room-temperature (in a cool room) in an air-tight container. You actually don't need or want to keep them refrigerated, as that can affect the texture of the chocolate!

How long can you keep chocolate-covered strawberries?

At room temperature, you'll want to eat them with a day. If you do keep them in the fridge they can last 4-5 days, but the quality won't be the best. However, if you need to make them ahead of time and need to preserve the quality and flavor, you can freeze the berries! Freeze them in a single layer baking sheet (so the chocolate-covered strawberries don't stick together), once completely frozen, you can combine them into a container and freezer for a good 4-5 months. To thaw, simply take them out and either eat the chocolate-covered strawberry kabobs frozen or thaw for an hour or two at room temperature before serving.

The skewer sticks are a great idea. Comes in handy for functions where there will be children and chocolate fountains. Keeps their fingers out of the fountain and safely on the strawberry. Marshmallows could work in place of strawberries or as another option as well.
